This Sunday, we considered the familiar story of the two disciples who encounter the Risen Christ on the Road to Emmaus. The Risen Christ is alive in the world in the steady, sustaining rhythm of human companionship – sharing life’s journey – walking and talking – companions on the way.

This Sunday, we continued our worship series on courtroom scenes in the Bible -- "Call Your Next Witness" -- this week as Job brings a case against God. As wee come to the Book of Job – with Job’s big questions – and ours – we don’t find a neat and tidy answer. We come to the Book of Job – and what we find is a groan and a shout – as ancient as this story, and as fresh and alive as the dawn of this very day. In our suffering, God speaks with us out of the whirlwind, and we live, and we somehow find our way to love.

In our suffering, God speaks with us out of the whirlwind, and we live, and we somehow find our way to love.

This Sunday in worship, as we thought about the week that included Independence Day, we thought some about sovereignty, power, freedom, kings, presidents, Supreme Court decisions, and Jesus. There was a lot rumbling around in the sermon, but it grounded itself in this: God is sovereign by sharing God's freedom with us, freedom to look to the well-being of each other and the most vulnerable in the midst of us.

Putting a link here where you can read or listen, if you're interested.

God is sovereign by sharing God’s own freedom with us, urging us to live out the self-giving love of Christ.

We celebrated Juneteenth in worship this past Sunday -- thinking on the example of Opal Lee, "the grandmother of Juneteenth"; on M. Shawn Copeland's book "Enfleshing Freedom" and her insistence on the centrality of bodies in the work of liberation; on the continuing problems of racial health disparities in Marin County; and on the "Come to the Table" project in Marin City, opening up conversation about the work that is ours to do together. Putting a link here where you can read or listen to the sermon, if it's of interest.

God creates us all equally human, and insists that we work for the freedom and equality of all.

Please join us this Sunday for a worship service featuring the 1st Pres Chancel Choir along with community singers and a string orchestra. Directed by Daniel Canosa, they will be presenting Sunrise Mass by Ola Gjeilo.

Sunrise Mass has received universal acclaim for its innovative, lush, and evocative harmonies. The listener is taken on a spiritual journey which evolves from the transparent and spacey origins of life to something solid and grounded. It has been called a metaphor for human development.

Please spread the word to the broader community and come enjoy the journey!
