Novena to the Holy Spirit

* Starts Tomorrow May 14* - Friday May 22, 2026

Join St. Anselm parishioners in praying a novena to the Holy Spirit during the nine days starting on Ascension Thursday (May 14) and leading up to Pentecost. Traditionally, the Roman Church keeps the feast of Our Lord’s triumphant departure from our universe and entrance into the gates of Heaven with an octave, during which the Church relishes the mystery and prays, traditionally through a formal novena (nine days of prayer), for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the feast of Pentecost (next Sunday). Indeed, the Catholic practice of novenas is rooted in the nine days that the first Christians, surrounding Our Lady in the Upper Room in Jerusalem, waited in prayerful hope for the Gift of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer
LEADER: Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful

ALL: And kindle in them the fire of your love.

LEADER: Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created

ALL: And You shall renew the face of the earth.

ALL:
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant
that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations,
Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Day 1-May 14
May all parishioners of St. Anselm be united in the vision to put the truth of the gospel and
fidelity to our Catholic faith above partisan politics and ideological pursuits.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

Day 2- May 15
May our Restoration Project be a success, and families of St. Anselm Church, through the power
of the Holy Spirit, receive answers to their specific needs: good health for the sick and elderly,
peace and joy for married couples, opportunities for those seeking jobs, strength for families
caring for the terminally ill, and all who are in any kind of need.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

Day 3- May 16
May the Lord protect vulnerable migrants and refugees, and may the Church enjoy the freedom to
carry out the ministries that Christ has handed to her.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

Day 4- May 17
May our world experience peace and may the Lord protect persecuted Christians in Nigeria,
Venezuela, the Middle East, and all parts of the world.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

Day 5- May 18
May governments strengthen the ability for parents to direct the education of their children, and
may parents realize that the best gift for their children is the gift of faith.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

Day 6- May 19
May governments respect the consciences of all people who are sick and vulnerable, and may
caregivers themselves find the help and support they need in their own lives.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

Day 7- May 20
May all family members and friends who have turned away from the practice of their faith come
to seek the true God of consolation and joy.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

Day 8-May 21
May all who have been abused and wounded by Church functionaries, and all who struggle with
addictions find healing from God who alone can mend them and for continued protection from any
abuse of God’s children.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

Day 9- May 22
May all parishioners of St. Anselm be united in focus on the truth of the gospel and fidelity to our
Catholic faith and may the temples of our bodies and Church structure experience the renewal and
grace of God’s restoration.

Come Holy Spirit
fill the hearts of your faithful...

This Sunday, April 26, is Good Shepherd Sunday and World Day of Prayer for Vocations. The purpose of World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to publicly fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2).

On Tuesday, April 21, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops released survey results from more than 300 men being ordained to the priesthood this year. Out of those who responded, 92% said they had been encouraged to consider the priesthood by at least one person they knew. As we pray for an increase in vocations this weekend, consider encouraging someone to consider the priesthood or consecrated life.

In his message for the World Day of Pray for Vocations, Pope Leo XIV encouraged young people to listen to the voice of the Lord.

"Make time, then, for Eucharistic adoration; meditate faithfully on the word of God, so that you may put it into practice each day; and participate actively and fully in the sacramental and ecclesial life of the Church," said the Holy Father. "In this way, you will come to know the Lord. Through the intimacy of His friendship, you will discover how to give of yourselves, whether through marriage, the priesthood, the permanent diaconate, or consecrated life. Every vocation is an immeasurable gift for the Church and for those who receive it with joy." (Source: Catholic San Francisco)
