Abbey Caskets

Abbey Caskets Handcrafted caskets and cremation urns For more than a decade, the Benedictine monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey have operated Abbey Caskets.

Abbey Caskets was established by Saint Meinrad Archabbey in 1999. The handcrafted caskets and cremation urns are made of hardwoods such as poplar, oak, walnut and cherry and are sold directly to the public. We invite you to view the handcrafted caskets and cremation urns on our website. All the proceeds help support the 156-year tradition of this Benedictine monastery. Please contact us if we can

help you honor a loved one's life. One of only two archabbeys in the United States, the Benedictine monastery of Saint Meinrad Archabbey was established in 1854 by the Abbey of Einsiedeln in Switzerland. A southern Indiana priest, Fr. Joseph Kundek, asked the Swiss monks to settle here to help minister to the German-speaking Catholic population and to start a seminary that would prepare local men to become priests. In the 150 years since, the monastic community at Saint Meinrad, Indiana has grown to about 110 monks.

Something exciting is taking shape behind the scenes at Abbey Caskets!

We’ve partnered with JLS Collective to share the heart of Abbey Caskets through a new video that offers a closer look at the meaning, care, and tradition behind our work.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to share this part of our story—and we can’t wait to see the finished piece.

It was a fun day digging into all that is Abbey Caskets, and yes… we’re already hoping it earns two thumbs up! 👍👍

The Abbot’s blessing in our workshop is a powerful reminder of the meaning behind the work we do each day. ✨

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak, OSB, visited the workshop yesterday to bless our newest collection of caskets, urns, and keepsake crosses.

This special blessing reflects the prayer, care, and compassion that go into every piece we create. It also serves as a spiritual connection between our monastic community and the families we serve — a sign that our prayers continue long after a casket or urn has been delivered.

The staff of Abbey Caskets took a step back in time during a tour of the old carpenter shop today. Though the shop is no longer in use, it was fascinating to see tools and projects that feel frozen in time.

A piece on the wall featured a fitting quote from Pope John Paul II: “Christ, while being God, devoted most of the years of his life on earth to manual work at the carpenter’s bench.”

A simple reminder of the dignity found in humble, meaningful work—values that continue to guide our work at Abbey Caskets every day.
