“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
- Matthew 11:28

We can’t find rest anywhere else, or in anyone else, than in Jesus. But why do we receive such satisfying rest in him alone?

We don’t have to impress Jesus. In fact, we can’t. We can’t do anything that will earn his respect. We can’t help him do something that he couldn’t do better by himself.

How does Jesus give rest? He loves us, accepts us, and forgives us… but not because of our accomplishments. He loves us, accepts us, and forgives us because of his love. We have value because he valued us enough to die for us. Our lives can now change from an endless pursuit of fulfillment to an endless expression of thanks to our Savior.

In Christ we bask in the security of total forgiveness. We are enveloped in his love. We are settled in our hearts because of his acceptance of us. Does it sound too good to be true? This is one case in which the truth is incredibly good.

Come to Jesus. Grow deeper into Christ. He will give you the rest that brings a calm to your soul.

GOD IS YOUR HIDING PLACE

You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
- Psalm 32:7

We live in a “go out there and be bold” kind of world. But it seems a longing for hiding is built into us. We tuck our faces into the necks of our parents as babies. We play hide-and-seek with our childhood friends. As adults we hide in less conspicuous ways: behind the screen of a computer, in the bottom of a glass, underneath all that makeup. So perhaps it's not about whether we will hide but rather where and how.

And this is the beautiful reality: God himself says he will be our hiding place. He'll be the retreat and the fortress and the silent space in a chaotic, busy world.
Where does this mean we are hidden? In love. Because "God is love" (1 John 4:8).

When Adam and Eve fell, they hid. God came looking for them and asked, “Where are you?" (Gen. 3:9). It seems a strange question because, as God, he already knew. Perhaps he needed to ask because they didn't fully realize the truth. Maybe he's asking the same of us today. Where are you? No matter the answer we may give — in the middle of depression, on the battlefield, at the center of a stage — he wants us to know that is not our truest, deepest location.

Where we belong, where we've been all along, where we always are in some mysterious way is in Him. Secure. Loved. Known. He is our hiding place; he is
our heart's true home.

WORKING WITH OUR HANDS

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands...
- 1 Thessalonians 4:11

Have you noticed that most of the Ten Commandments begin with a negative order, saying, “You shall not . . .”? In commandments six through ten, the negative orders set clear, concrete boundaries for how we are to treat people. Without the command “You shall not steal,” for instance, it would be impossible to live together with our neighbors. Stealing and deceit destroy trust and create enemies.

In his letter to the Christians at Thessalonica, Paul offers solid advice for respecting the property of others: “Work with your hands.” Does this mean the Bible only approves of livelihoods involving manual labor? No, we can glorify God and love others with all kinds of honorable work we can do. What Paul suggests in this passage is that work itself is good. Work is a gift and a resource, and it reflects our Maker, who works faithfully with all kinds of creativity. When we work diligently, using the gifts and talents that God gives us, we earn others’ respect and avoid being overly dependent.

Theft has been with us since human beings fell into sin. But today it can seem as if taking advantage of others and their possessions is more rampant than ever. In contrast, by using what God gives us in gratitude and contentment, we can show others how to live in community as God has designed us to do. And this can help us share with others what God has given us.

JESUS IS MAKING SOMETHING
BEAUTIFUL OF YOUR LIFE

Isn't this the carpenter? (Mark 6:3)

Jesus knew ordinary. He knew the feel of a splinter in his thumb, the smell of earth and sawdust, the sound of nails against boards. He understood deadlines and demanding customers. He comprehended the common, the kind of day that slips right by without fanfare or fireworks.

Jesus likely would have begun his work as a carpenter while still a teenager. When we consider this, it seems a decade or more of his time on earth could have been used differently. Only ten percent of Jesus's life was spent in public ministry.

I think we need to know this because we will all have "carpenter years." Times when we don't feel like we're living up to our potential. We feel like we could be doing something more, something bigger. We can resist the smallness. We, like the questioning crowd around Jesus, can become disappointed and disillusioned by what doesn't seem as grand as we'd imagined.

So much of God's plan is a mystery. But those "wasted" years in his life, in ours? It seems clear there is no such thing. The master carpenter knows how to make every part useful, every part beautiful.

And he is not done with his work in us yet.

GOD WILL GET YOU THROUGH

“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.”
Isaiah 43:2

“When you go through deep waters…” Noah and the ark, safe in the flood until dry land appeared again.

"When you go through rivers of difficulty..." The people of Israel finally crossing the Jordan into the promised land after the wilderness.

"When you walk through the fire of oppression.." Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego exiting the furnace unscathed.

God is still writing stories of his faithfulness-showing up in our everyday, anxious lives, reminding us that he is with and for us. Getting through doesn't mean getting what we want. It means having what we need in each moment regardless of the results.

The diagnosis might not instantly disappear, but he will get you through it.
The prodigal might not return tomorrow, but he will get you through it.
The challenges at work might not resolve in one meeting, but he will get you through it.

We are not alone in our deep waters. We are not forsaken in our rivers of difficulty. We are not abandoned to the flames. No, we are God's people, and we press on, refusing to give up, remembering we are loved in every circumstance.

He will get you through.
