Our churches often gather around what we call a “service,” but who is the object of our service? Answering this question can be confusing, but in doing so, we can determine the greatest object of our worship.

Scripture is one of our greatest guides and has instilled worship through diverse expressions for millenia. What makes it so powerful, and how can we understand how to use it as a flame that lights our way, rather than a flame that burns us down?

The Shattering of Babel (Not Peace, but a Sword, pt. 6) | The Haven | May 27, 2026
-
Jesus taught us that he was bringing a sword because, as we have learned, the gospel is divisive because its truth is often difficult to accept. Tonight, we begin to explore that reality by looking at a scripture when God instigated division in order to protect humankind from our own devices.

Jesus described a world in which worship would not be defined by a person's location or ethnicity. Rather, worship should be a reality born from the genuineness of our hearts for who God really is. When we focus on these deepest aspects of worship, we become empowered to draw others into the same kind of worship.

The Nuance & The Nonsense (Not Peace, but a Sword, pt. 5) | The Haven | May 20, 2026
-
Often, the biggest bones we have to pick with others have to do with the smallest of disagreements over nonessential issues. Tonight, we discuss the importance of nuance and how we can use it for mutual understanding rather than to alienate each other.

The journey of our lives is guided by faith. The objects of our greatest faith define who or what we worship. What we worship, we follow, and the path we follow determines our destination. In this introduction to a new teaching series, we'll begin to explore what it means to be guided by a world whose affections are for itself, and to be guided by the God whose affections for us run deeper than we could imagine.

May 13, 2026 | Motives & Missions (Not Peace, but a Sword, pt. 4) | The Haven
-
One of the most divisive issues in the modern church is the approach to doing ministry. There are many means but also many motives, both with good and bad possibilities. Tonight, we'll work to discern our motives and ethics not simply by whether or not we achieve our desired outcomes but by our obedience to Christ.

The greatest freedom comes in knowing that nothing in this world binds us, not even life itself. We are not slaves to this life, this world or the corruption within it. This frees us to lay down our lives, knowing the life we live in the Spirit is pure, unending, and cannot be taken away.

May 6, 2026 | Opining Mouths & Opening Minds (Not Peace, but a Sword, pt. 3) | The Haven

Part of the difficulty of overcoming division is in learning to hold our opinions loosely. What makes this especially difficult is discerning between our opinions and the moments when they happen to align with true doctrine. Tonight, we'll explore this difference and learn how to practice humility in our assumed knowledge, seeking to truly understand each other and clearly see what is true about God and the world.
