Imitate Jesus

Imitate Jesus We equip believers to engage others like Jesus. It begins with an AWARENESS of fear. In November 2013 (before UVBO existed) we visited Casa de Belen.

In time our Bicycle repair skills grew and we repaired a mountain of broken bicycles with the support of Youth For Christ and Waldrons Outdoor Sports. In October 2016, we (UVBO) came under the umbrella of Umpqua Valley Youth For Christ. Since then we have began to invest into more of our communities youth while impacting individuals and families in need. After loosing our bike shop and drop-in cen

ter retail space in 2021, we entered the homes of our youth apprentices. It was then that we recognized there was a desperate need to support families, and that to meet the needs we would have to multiply our efforts. God gave us a desire to find and equip believers with a heart for the vulnerable. For several years God has lead us through the development of what has becoming known as Imitate Jesus. Imitate Jesus isn't so much a program or organization as it is a trauma informed discipleship framework and training opportunity for every believer. Because believer's can't engage what they do not see. We help them see fear like Jesus.

A real life example of what it looks (and feels) like to imitate Jesus.

I have been less loving, patient, and kind recently. My buddy Evan noticed my "bad" BEHAVIOR.

Evan chose to be FULLY PRESENT. He asked questions and listened like Jesus. I felt seen, heard, and understood.

He saw our NEED for rest and space to process life's difficult circumstances.

Then... he responded like Jesus with the time, energy, and resources he had available. He helped subdue creation so a brother and his wife could have space to process life and rest. It feels like God used my buddy to part the waters so we could get on dry land as we were.... almost "drowning." Him and his wife agreed to carry some of our burdens for a few days while we rest.

This is God plan for every believer.
Who has imitated Jesus like this to you?

Has anyone assumed you were bad, where if they asked and listened they would have realized you were just really tired?

When you see behaviors you don't understand or like, be fully present and watch God give you a clearer perspective.

Being fully present is how you can position yourself [by faith] to be salt and light in the lives around you.

Every believer can imitate Jesus. It begins with being fully present.

Do you have an example of this in your life? Do share!

It is normal to not "want to" be fully present. I often fail at it. I get deceived.

Thankfully God reminded me how much better it is to fully be with people then to doom scroll, or try to "complete" all the work around the house.

I almost didn't visit Ron. But God reminded me about when I recently paused my plans to engage a young man who felt the need to come see me. I paused to listen and ask discovering questions.

I shouldn't have been surprised, but God again had aligned things so perfectly. God provided a lead at an Oxford house (that happened to just open so rooms were available). God provided a lead for work (a position happen to have opened up that young man could fill). The reason I was even home was because God caused my appointment fell through.

When you choose to by FAITH, be fully present like CHIRST, don't be surprised if God works through you. Yes. Even you.

Christians often forget this.

We need to be fully present in the lives of those around us in order to discover the why behind "bad" behaviors and beliefs.

When you notice or recognize a symptom, engage like CHRIST.

Care enough to ask questions.
Have a playful attitude when possible.
Right next to them is where you want to be positioned.
Into their eyes, is where you want to look.
Speak with a volume, tone, and cadence that reveals God's heart.
Touch people in a healthy way.

When we practice doing this by faith, God often reveals the why behind the "sinful" belief or behavior.

Many believers avoid "bad" behaving people. They don't realize those around the CAN'T obey.

When we choose to be fully present, we position ourselves by faith to begin discovering why they can't.

I often discover that my neighbors do not understand the "law", have ever been taught the skills to "obey", or even have the resources to do the "right" thing.

Ministry begins by choosing to be fully present. By taking this step of faith, God changes us.

Many believers (us included) get decieved into passing up on what brings true joy. Namely... being fully present.

Like a child finding joy in participating in making a meal, believers find true joy in participating in what God is doing in the lives of those around them.

Like CHRIST, be fully present and experience the joy of God working through you.

Many believers can't see where God is working.

John 5:19 - Jesus said to them,"truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of His own accord, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise."

When believers choose to be fully present in the lives of others, they position themselves to discover where God is working.

When they see where God is working, they join in ministering like Jesus.

God desires to use every believer.
Let Him work through you by being fully present like CHRIST.
