As a boy somewhere around 10, we lived in the country just outside of Sorgho Kentucky. In a field close by would be where I would be playing. There was a small pond. Rabbits galore. A creek. It was all mine.

One day I decided to dig into this mound of dirt. It was kind of sandy and easy to dig into. As I was digging, it occurred to me that I could dig a cave. So I did. It was about two feet in diameter. I dug in as far as my knees, so about four feet.

As I was digging and having the time of my life, I began hearing something. The ground seemed to make a funny noise. At first I thought that since I was digging so far in, things would sound different. So, I kept digging. Then I noticed the ground around me was sounding like bacon frying in Mommas skillet. I freaked out and back peddled real quick. And just as my head came out, the tunnel crashed in! I was stunned as I knew if I was still in there, I would be buried. Being on the side away from the house, nobody would notice for a long time. I sat there and cried because I knew I could have been buried alive with no escape and death would have been a panic driven fight for air that wouldn't come.

This past week I have thought about that moment few times and I still feel the excitement of digging that cave as I also remember that panic. I think of it because I hear the bacon again. The sizzle of machinery running. The sizzle of violence. The sizzle of politics. The sizzle of hate. The silent sizzle of addiction, anxiety, and fear. The sizzle of busyness.

Do you hear it?

I invite you come and worship The One Who promises peace to those who come to Him.

Jesus Christ.
