Who Is Worthy?

We keep on praying for you, that our God will make you worthy of the life to which he called you. And we pray that God, by his power, will fulfill all your good intentions and faithful deeds. Then everyone will give honor to the name of our Lord Jesus because of you.
2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

All of us have experienced feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness in areas of our lives. As Christians, our insecurities often keep us from coming boldly into God’s presence to receive his power for service. Paul knew the Thessalonians were feeling unworthy in their present calling to suffering and persecution. He wanted to encourage them by clarifying that God himself would make them worthy (1:5). To what life has God called you? Preaching or teaching God’s Word? Caring for young children? Serving God in the business world or taking the gospel to a foreign land? Whatever our calling, our best intentions and good deeds will accomplish nothing of eternal value apart from the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s when we die to our own abilities and surrender our work to God that he infuses our feeble efforts with his power. When we seek the Lord humbly in prayer, admit our inadequacy, and ask for his grace and sufficiency, he will divinely enable us to fulfill our calling. He and he alone can make us worthy of the life to which he has called us.

THANK YOU, LORD, that my effectiveness in your calling doesn’t depend on my abilities. In your grace, impart your power to me so that I may live the life to which you have called me. Make me a vessel of your glory so that those who see my works will look past me and be drawn to you.

“Have you, O God, seen yourself in what I said, thought, and did today? Did I care for others the way you would have?” Through these questions I find the answers to the greatest of all life’s questions: Did I fulfill my destiny today? Did I glorify God?

“Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you. If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭89‬-‭93‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Guarding the Truth

Read: Mark 13:5-23
“False Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect— if that were possible.”
Mark 13:22

“The best pro- tection against Satan’s lies is to know God’s truth.”
—Anonymous

IN WORD Jesus warns of false Christs and prophets— deceivers who are subtle and impressive enough to lead true believers away, at least for a time. It’s a sobering thought. We like to think we are so devoted to Jesus that we’re immune to the deceptive spirits of this age. Not so, says Jesus. Even His well-trained disciples, who saw Him in the flesh and learned straight from the words of His mouth, are given strong warning. The false saviors are coming, armed with miracles and signs. And we are their prey.
In fact, many of them have already come. Jesus’ prediction is frighteningly accurate. There are those who have already said, “Look, there he is!” (v. 21), and many have believed them. There are cults all over this planet, many of which have begun by someone speaking lies in the name of Jesus. Their membership consists primarily of those who have once sat in the pews of our respected, faithful congregations. If these have been led astray, so can others. How can we protect ourselves against deception? IN DEED Jesus gives us the answer in verse 23: “Be on your guard.” Deception usually comes to those who were not wary of their vulnerability. Perhaps they started adding a little unbiblical philosophy to their biblical faith. Perhaps they saw quick results that their patient discipleship would not match. Perhaps they assumed they knew enough of God’s Word to put it on the shelf and safely entertain competing worldviews, never noticing their foundation eroding beneath them. Whatever the case, they thought they were safe. But they weren’t.
What are you doing to be on guard? Deception can have eternal consequences for you and those you influence. Pray earnestly for discernment. Cling to Jesus’ Word as if your life depends on it. In many ways, it does.

Spiritual Lessons

Always be joyful. Keep on praying. No matter what happens, always be thankful, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-19

When spiritual directives such as Paul gives us here confront us—always be joyful, always be thankful no matter what happens—our natural response is, “That’s impossible!” We tend to feel inadequate and unable to please God. How can we rejoice in tragedy, pray when we are otherwise occupied, or be thankful in times of adversity? The key is in Paul’s next words: “Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.”
The purpose of our existence is not simply to be “good” people. God has laid hold of and redeemed us for the purpose of forming us into his likeness as we walk through the experiences of this life with him. We are to become a dwelling place for his Spirit. Our challenge is learning to let him do the impossible through us! He is using everything in our lives to teach us that apart from him we can do nothing but through his Spirit we can do all things, even rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in everything.

LORD, help me to understand that you are truly causing all things to work together for my good this very day. I want to be obedient to what your Word asks of me. I cannot do this on my own. But in your Spirit’s power, I can do what you tell me to do. May you be my joy, and enable me to be aware of your presence with me continually in Jesus.

Pray and never faint, is the motto Christ gives us for praying. It is the test of our faith, and the more severe the trial and the longer the waiting, the more glorious the results.

“Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭32‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Deep Roots

Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans and turn their hearts away from the Lord. . . . But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they go right on producing delicious fruit.
Jeremiah 17:5-8

What a stark contrast Jeremiah describes in these verses between those who trust in God and those who trust in human beings and have turned away from God. Instead of thriving and prospering, people who look to mere humans for help and rescue live unproductive, dry lives, like a stunted shrub languishing in the desert for lack of water.
But those whose hearts trust in God, those for whom the Lord is their hope and confidence, will be blessed. Like a tree planted by water, the heat and hard times don’t destroy them because their roots are sunk deep into God’s resources and life. Even in months of drought, even into old age, they will stay green and keep producing, not just any fruit—but delicious fruit. Though their bodies may decline in physical strength or grow more fragile with advancing age, yet God’s Spirit will renew their inner strength day by day. As they are rooted in Christ’s inexhaustible supply, they will continue to be productive and bring glory to God as long as they live.
