When you're in the hardest season of your life — when you're suffering, when you're struggling, when you're barely holding on — that's when you discover why community matters.

Pastor Patrick reminded us: "Rejoice in hope. Be patient in tribulation. Be constant in prayer."

But here's the thing. That's hard to do alone.

That's why God gave us community. Other believers who come alongside you and say, "I believe in the God you believe in. I'm walking through this with you. I'll pray with you."

Not giving advice. Not fixing your problem. Just being present. Listening. Praying. Loving you with actions, not just words.

Pastor Patrick talked about one of the greatest blessings in his life: knowing he has a group of people who keep him in prayer. And he's right. Having a body of believers who pray for you throughout the week — who know what you're going through and bring you before God — that changes everything.

If you're in a community group, you have that. You have people who know your name, know your story, and are holding you up in prayer.

If you're not, this is your week. Community groups are kicking off. They meet at different times throughout the week, so there's a group that fits your schedule. Find your people. And this Sunday, right after service, we're gathering for a potluck to kick off together. Bring a dish, bring your family. Join your group. 💛

We've got some exciting things coming up at Hope Fellowship.

This Sunday, we're welcoming back Pastor Patrick from his sabbatical. He's rested, renewed, and ready to share what God taught him during this time away. And he's kicking us off with a message on the importance of community — something we all need to hear.

Then on September 9th, our Wednesday night activities are back. Christian Service Brigade. Wildflowers. Community groups. It's time to reconnect, grow together, and dive deeper into what it means to follow Jesus alongside your church family.

Right after church on the 13th, we're gathering for a potluck as we kick off community groups. Bring a dish, bring your family, bring your neighbors. This is where real community happens — around a table, sharing a meal, building relationships that last.

Also starting this month — on the 1st and 3rd Saturday, 9:00am-11:00am — we're kicking off a time of playing sports together. Teens and adults, get ready to connect, compete, and have fun as a community.

And mark your calendars for September 26th — the National Day of Praise and Worship. We're gathering for a time of worship that goes so much deeper than just singing. Worship is surrender. Worship is declaring who God is. Worship is alignment of our hearts with His. It's a chance to experience worship as a full-life response to God, not just a Sunday morning song.

Community. Connection. Worship. That's what's ahead.

Early in his ministry, Pastor Al was struggling. Small church. Not much money. He told his wife, "Connie, I'm never going to be able to retire. I'll just have to work till I die."

But as he started learning biblical principles about money — living within his means, honoring God, preparing for the future — God showed up. And he learned something that changed everything.

"God is huge. God can bless you. God can work outside of your box. God can provide."

And then came the peace: "I can only do what I can do, and God only holds you responsible for what you can do."

Maybe you're there right now. Looking at your finances and thinking it seems impossible. The bills are real. The struggle is real. You're working hard and it still doesn't feel like enough.

That message is for you: Do what you can do. Live faithfully with what you have. And then trust God with the rest.

God owns it all. God is your provider. And He's faithful. 💛

First fruits.

That's an old concept from Scripture. When the harvest came in, people would bring the first and best of what they had to God. Not the leftovers. Not what was left over after they took care of themselves. The first fruits.

It's a posture. It says: God comes first. Before my bills, before my wants, before my savings — God gets the first part.

Pastor Al called it "keeping Him at the first place in my life." It's not about the amount. It's about the priority.

A widow who gives her last two coins is giving more than a rich person who gives from their excess. Not in terms of dollars, but in terms of devotion.

So the question isn't: "Can I afford to give?" The question is: "Does God come first in my life — including with my finances?"

If He does, generosity follows naturally. If He doesn't, all the money in the world won't satisfy you anyway.

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver. — 2 Corinthians 9:7

Notice what that says: give as YOU'VE decided. Not what the church decides. Not what your friends decide. Not what you think you're supposed to do.

You decide. In your heart.

Pastor Al emphasized this: generosity flows from a willing heart, not from obligation. Not from guilt. Not from pressure.

If you're giving reluctantly — if you're giving because you feel like you have to — that's not what God is looking for. If you're giving because everyone else at church gives and you don't want to look bad — that's not it either.

God loves a cheerful giver. Cheerful. Joyful. Willing.

So here's the question: where does your heart want to give? What need makes you think, "I want to help with that"? What area of ministry or person or community tugs at your heart?

Start there. Give there. Give joyfully, from your own convictions, from your own heart.

That's the kind of giving God loves. 💛

It's Friday. And here's something worth sitting with this weekend —

Greed. It sneaks in quietly. It's the small voice that says you need just a little more. That whisper of envy when you see someone else's success. That thought that one more thing would finally satisfy.

But Jesus said it plainly: "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions." — Luke 12:15

So this weekend, watch out for greed. Really watch. Because it will sneak into your life if you let it.

Instead, choose generosity. Choose contentment. 💛

Are you content? Are you generous? If you're not, I wonder if the only other option is to be greedy.

Here's the thing about greed — it doesn't announce itself. It sneaks in quietly. It's the voice that says you need just a little more. It's the envy when you see someone else's success. It's the thought that one more thing would finally satisfy.

But greed is idolatry. It means you've made acquiring things your god instead of worshiping the true God.

The antidote? Contentment and generosity.
Two cures that work together.

Contentment means accepting what God has given you because you trust He is good. Generosity means looking for ways to give when you have excess.

If you're not living in one of these, Pastor Al challenges us to ask: Am I being greedy?

This week, notice where greed is sneaking in. And then choose differently. Choose contentment. Choose generosity. 💛

Yesterday Pastor Al took us into Luke 12 for round two of "Dollar and Sense," and he didn't pull any punches.

The text: A rich fool who had everything — abundant crops, full barns, security. And Jesus called him a fool.

Not because he had money. But because of one sin: greed.

Greed is an insatiable desire to possess or acquire something far greater than we need. It's never satisfied. "Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income."

The rich fool was foolish for four reasons: He was materialistic (thought possessions could satisfy him), self-centered (focused only on himself), boasted of tomorrow (acted as if he controlled the future), and laid up temporal treasures instead of eternal ones.

And here's the warning: "Put to death... greed which is idolatry." Greed becomes the god we worship instead of the true God.

But Pastor Al also gave us hope. The antidote to greed? Contentment and generosity.

Contentment means accepting what God sends because we know He is good. Generosity means looking for ways to give when we have excess.

God provides, we give, He blesses us in response, we give again. The cycle continues.

Last week we learned the foundation of Dollar and Sense: God owns it all. God provides it all. Our job is faithful management.

Tomorrow we're going deeper as we move to Luke 12. Jesus has something to say about greed, money, and what really matters.
