Paul’s letter to Timothy continues and to compress it just a bit he tells Timothy to teach the folks in Ephesus to focus on what’s important and ignore the what’s not. It’s a message we need to remember.

My Dear Friends and Family,

First, apologies for getting this out late. But - it’s Sunday so that’s not TOO late.

This is the last in our “Credo” series. It is NOT from the Nicene Creed, however, as we finished that last week. This is what is typically called a “baptist distinctive” (although it’s not simply baptist any longer). It’s called Soul Competency. Understand, this is not about the competency of the soul APART from God, but about the competency of EACH SOUL to relate to God. It also does not mean that we won’t need anyone else when we place our faith in Jesus. We become part of the body of Christ. Like all bodies, the parts have distinct roles - different things that we are, in fact, made for. However, the parts of the body are all connected. They cannot, in fact, live and operate separately. Christians exist in community. However, we are competent to relate to God, know God, and serve God.

My Dear Friends and Family,

Monday is Memorial Day here in the US. Though it seems it is mostly observed by cookouts and appliance sales, it is better to remember those who have died in the service of their country in wars and battles. Our prayers are with their families and loved ones who must go on without them.

We finish this look at the Nicene Creed today with an appropriate ending - the Resurrection of the Dead and the age to come.

My dear friends and family,

I want to wish all my friends a happy Mothers Day (which coincidentally falls on the same day for the US as for Mexico this year). I pray that you are either blessed by the presence or the memory of your own mother. If not, I pray that you may be blessed by the women in your life who have been surrogate mothers to you throughout your life.

While the section of the Nicene Creed that we are focusing on today is quite brief, it is important because it is about the Body of Christ on earth - the church. There is even something of a problem with one word for some protestants, but I hope to show that it is more of a misunderstanding than a real problem.

My Dear Friends and Family:

As of this writing our brother Freddy is very ill. He has been weak ever since his injury years ago. Jan’s death was particularly hard on him. My prayers are for him to be free from pain and to keep his trust in God. There are also many folks who are currently suffering because of financial stresses - increased prices, fewer options for help and loss of jobs are forcing many people to make difficult, even impossible choices. We must be aware of those who need us and be God’s hands and feet for them.

The Holy Spirit has moved people throughout history to speak God’s message to us. God the Spirit continues to speak to us through the Scripture - the record of God’s message to his people. We’ll look at what the Nicene Creed says about that and what the Scripture tells us even further.

We still live in perilous - and increasingly expensive - times. Many around the world are living in constant fear. Many have lost their homes and even their lives. The word today reminds us that this will not always be the case. Jesus is coming back in glory and will judge all people, living and dead. Things WILL change.
