Between giving haircuts with Showered With Hope at WSDCA this morning and doing more cuts at the Friday Dinner with Tom Whillock and Jennifer Simmons, Home Ministries provided 8 haircuts and 4 beard trims today!

We even had the Gentle Barber show up to help with haircuts!

A big thank you to Deb Daly for helping my boys settle into their volunteer roles.

If you are wanting to come to community events to help out and get to know our beautiful community, Deb is super knowledgeable and such a great teacher and guide.

The village showed up and showed out today.

I had an absolute blast with all of our friends.

Reclamation of the WORD — Part II

axios
(ak'-see-os) adj. Greek
Definition:
1. In right alignment.
2. Of corresponding weight or value.

Commonly translated as: worthy

In the marketplace of Jesus's time, axios described something balanced properly on the scale. Something in right alignment. Of corresponding weight and value.

In other words:
a worker’s pay was meant to be in alignment with the worker’s labor.

But worthiness has never needed to be earned.

The world teaches people to measure their value by money, appearance, status, success, productivity, and the opinions of others.

But our value is God given.

Every person carries gifts, curiosities, passions, experiences and purpose unique to every person that has ever lived. And that life has intrinsic value.

Loving God can start with honoring His creation.

You.

There are many ways we honor our worthiness as God's creation.

Protecting our peace.
Setting healthy boundaries.
Caring for ourselves.
Living in alignment with what is true.

True freedom is not escaping responsibility.

True freedom happens when you accept the responsibility of becoming who you were created to be.

Some questions for you:

What changes when you believe your value is God given instead of earned?

What parts of yourself have you abandoned in order to feel accepted?

What would change if you stopped seeing yourself through the world’s eyes?

What would it mean to truly care for yourself as God’s creation?

What kind of person are you becoming?

RECLAMATION OF THE WORD
Part 1 — μετάνοια (metanoia)

Today the Greek word metanoia is usually translated as “repent.”

But for many people, the modern use of the word “repent” has become suffocating. Not about returning to God, but about feeling unworthy.

The original meaning is closer to:

“a change of mind”
or
“a transformation of perspective.”

The Hebrew idea closest to this was teshuvah:

“to return” or “to come back into alignment”

Before the Bible was translated into English, the scriptures had already been translated from Hebrew and Aramaic into Greek, then later into Latin, German and eventually English.

It’s wild that we can even hold these teachings in our hands today.

But words are precious things.

A word translated once may keep its meaning.

A word translated three or four times through centuries and cultures can lose some of its flavor.

Maybe Jesus was never shaming us when he said:

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
— Matthew 4:17

Maybe he was encouraging us:

“Change your mind and have a transformation of perspective, the kingdom of heaven is here and now… for those that have the eyes to see it.”

Some questions for you to think about:

What changes when you hear “change your mind” instead of “be ashamed”?

What if God is closer than you were taught?

Have fear and shame ever kept you from feeling connected to God?

What would it feel like to return to alignment instead of trying to earn worthiness?
