Shabbat Shalom! Today I wanted to post something a little different and a little less local specific, but I've always loved Jewish summer camp and it's always been a huge part of my life. That's why I'm happy to share this picture from 1948 showing an incredibly early Jewish summer camp! What you may not know is that Jewish summer camps largely began as a way for Jewish European immigrants to share various aspects of their culture with their children such as singing, dancing, and traditional sports! You can see how it ended up the way it is now!

At TBO, y'all means ALL! Happy Pride month! TBO is a safe place for everyone- regardless of their gender identity or sexuality. Fun Jewish pride fact: there are 6-8 gender identities discussed in the Talmud! There is not only historical, but also Jewish precedent for breaking the gender binary over 1500 years ago!

Shabbat Shalom! This weekend, we have a piece from a Russian American artist named Raphael Soyer who, though preferring other subjects, also did plenty of work on Judaic art! This particular piece, titled "Gentleman from Cracow," depicts a Jewish immigrant arriving in town for the first time, reflecting the artists own experiences. Lot to unpack here, but it's a gorgeous piece!

This week m arks the end of TBORS's 2025-2026 school year! Our Religious School is absolutely one of our best features (even if I am a little biased) and is so important for providing a space for the youth of our community to explore and embrace their Jewish identity and connect with their peers in the process. It was an absolutely fantastic school year and I can't wait to see what next year brings!

Happy Jewish American Heritage Month! If you like all the Judaic art that I find and post on here and haven't been to the NC Museum of Art, you're missing out! They have a whole wonderful Judaic art section that has been thoughtfully selected and beautifully displayed! It's not that far from temple even! Give it a visit next time you're able, I promise you won't be disappointed!

Shabbat Shalom! Today I have a very special glimpse into a really cool project we got to undertake last weekend! This is what the inside of a Genizah burial plot looks like! For those of you who don't know, a Genizah is for disposing of sacred text and ritual objects that are outdated, damaged, or otherwise just need to go! Instead of discarding such things in the trash, they are to be buried respectfully the same way we do with our loved ones! This plot was recently opened this past Sunday at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery at Oakwood and contains pieces from all over the Raleigh Jewish community!
