VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - We have been involved in supporting an organization called Benner Beats Hunger here in Racine that started last summer feeding hungry kids at a cop house on Geneva St. We gave them money and have been the space for their meetings.
This summer, the program has scaled way up with 10 sites! The government covers the cost of meals for the kids and BBH has raised the money to feed adults too. Many of the sites are community centers in Racine where there are day camps for kids (which previously didn't feed them) and so city employees are doing the meal coordination. However, there is a site at North Beach playground that could use a volunteer every weekday from 1230-100. I (Pastor Jenny) did it yesterday and it is super easy. You meet the truck driver with the food in the parking lot and he sets up a table with the food and takes care of all the serving. You just invite people to come and eat - you can walk around the playground or stand near the table and just tell people that it is a free lunch for anyone who would like to eat and that it will be there M-F at 12:30. That's it. You could go everyday if you were ambitious but you could also sign up to be the Tuesday person each week e.g. This could be something you could do alone or bring your family to do together.
