There are seasons in life when we pray more for relief than refinement. We ask God to change the circumstance, lift the burden, fix the situation, or restore our happiness as quickly as possible. Yet many times, while we are focused on comfort, God is focused on our character.
Psalm 119:67 says, “Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.” That verse reminds me that affliction is not always punishment. Sometimes it is protection. Sometimes God lovingly allows difficulty because He sees the places in our hearts that still need to grow. Pain has a way of driving us back to His Word, softening pride, deepening dependence, and teaching us things we may never have learned otherwise.
We would often choose the easier path, but God sees the eternal one. He knows that temporary happiness cannot compare to a heart that is truly close to Him. Holiness is formed in the quiet choices to obey Him, trust Him, surrender to Him, and continue following Him even when we do not understand what He is doing.
Hebrews 12:6 says, “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth…”
Correction, conviction, and refinement are not signs that God has abandoned us. They are often evidence that we belong to Him. A loving Father does not leave His children untouched by truth. He shapes them because He loves them too much to leave them unchanged.
Yet even in His correction, God is still so incredibly tender with us. Psalm 145:9 says,
“The Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.”
Not just some. All.
God’s goodness is not reserved for a select few people who seem to have easier lives or fewer burdens. He is good to all His children. Sometimes His goodness looks like abundance and answered prayers. Other times it looks like protection we did not recognize, correction we did not want, or strength to endure a season we would not have chosen. His goodness for you may not look like His goodness for someone else, but that does not make it any less good.
What a comforting thought that even the hard things God allows are still filtered through His goodness and mercy. He is never cruel, careless, or unkind with His children. Even when He is refining us, He remains compassionate. Every closed door, every season of waiting, every conviction, and every trial still passes through the hands of a loving Father whose mercies are “tender.”
Even in the hard seasons, God is never wasting our pain. Romans 8:28 reminds us:
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Not some things. All things.
The heartbreaks.
The waiting seasons.
The disappointments.
The stretching.
The refining.
God uses it all.
One day we may look back and realize the very season we begged God to remove was the season He used most to make us more like Christ. In the end, holiness will always produce something deeper and steadier than fleeting happiness ever could — true joy in Him.
