“The Lord your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be able to destroy them all at once; otherwise, the wild animals will become too numerous for you.” – Deuteronomy 7:22

“Patience is a virtue.” I remember my mom telling me this over and over again when I was a child. Back then, all I really heard when she said that was, “hold on a minute!” But now I understand she meant so much more than that. Patience is a characteristic of wise and moral people. It is something you must possess if you hope to be successful in life. Patience is a virtue just as important as honesty, integrity, courage, gratitude, or compassion.

This is especially important in our relationship with God. We must learn to trust his process. God is not just about getting to the end result. He has a plan and, because it is God’s plan, every step along the way is important. When we impatiently desire to skip to the end, we miss what it is he is trying to do and, in many cases, put ourselves in danger. Take each step with the Lord. Only move when he says so. Sit with him when he wants you to take it slow and trust him when he says it is time to go. The Lord will drive out the Enemy before you, it just may take some time; but that time is purposeful.

Lord, give us the virtue of patience. Give us the wisdom to be slow when it is time to be slow and to run when it is time to run. Let us look for You, not only in the goal, but in every bit of the process along the way.

“But will God indeed live on earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain you, much less this temple I have built.” – 1 Kings 8:27

Part of our humanity is our desire to understand things…to fully wrap our mind around something. This is one of the dangers of Google and AI. We think a quick search online will give us everything we need to know about a given subject, when in actuality, it takes a great deal of time and effort to fully understand something. But what is more difficult than that is the truth that there are things we will never fully understand. No matter how much effort we put in, it is just beyond us.

After the completion of the most expensive, elaborate, and beautiful temple anyone can imagine, King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, makes an amazing statement; “even the highest heavens cannot contain you.” He is not fooled for a second, thinking that God “lived” in this temple. Not even the highest heavens can contain God, how silly to think a temple could. No matter how far and wide the expanse of space is, God does not “live” there. That great expanse only exists because God created it. We cannot even comprehend the expanse, let alone the God who created it! …and we have to be okay with that. In fact, not only should we be okay, but we should be comforted. The force beyond all of creation loves us, desires a relationship with us, and goes to the greatest lengths to make sure that relationship can happen. If there is one unknowable thing we should desire to know a little more each day, it is the unimaginable love of this unfathomable God.

Almighty, loving Heavenly Father, keep us from the mistake of putting You in a box. Let us be comfortable with the fact that You are far above our understanding. But also, Father, fill us with a desire to know You more each day. Let the combination of Your vastness and Your intimacy bring us comfort for every season of life.

“As (Jesus) approached and saw the city, he wept for it, saying, ‘If you knew this day what would bring peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.’” – Luke 19:41-42

My grandfather passed away last week. He was my hero in so many ways. He touched countless lives simply pastoring two small churches and working at a Christian college. His deepest desire was for people to know Jesus. I was asked to share the message of Salvation at his memorial service. I accepted the invitation because I saw it as an incredible honor to share the Gospel at the service for this wonderful man of God. I must admit, though, I was scared. I was not sure I could make it through. I loved my grandfather deeply. He walked me through some of my most difficult times and taught me so much about ministry. Much of who I am today is because of him. How can I stand and speak in front of everyone while my heart was breaking?!

However, as I prepared to preach that message last Friday, I found something surprising taking place inside me. Reflecting on the Gospel slowly took away my sadness over the passing of my grandfather and began to fill me with a deep sorrow for those who have not yet surrendered their lives to Christ. When I thought about grandpa I smiled. When I thought about the lost friends and family, I cried. It was more difficult to look at those who did not know Jesus than it was to look at the pictures of grandpa. You see, no matter the state of our physical body, those who know Christ are truly alive, and those who do not are dead. I understood why grandpa had such a passion, and I understood why his heart was so broken for his lost loved ones. After that service, I am beginning to see people in ways I never saw them before. I pray this heartbreak for the lost never fades.

Heavenly Father, give us eyes to see life and death from a spiritual perspective. Let us weep for the lost among us as much as we weep for the ones who have left us. Let us see death in the spiritual realm and weep for those who are not yet alive in You. Give us a passion to preach the Gospel and bring life to dead people.

“Be on your guard, so that your minds are not dulled from carousing, drunkenness, and worries of life, or that day will come on you unexpectedly like a trap. For it will come on all who live on the face of the whole earth.” – Luke 21:34-35

Last night on the news I watched a video of a full-size truck running full speed into the back of a school bus. My first thought was, “how in the world could someone be that drunk at 3 o’clock in the afternoon!” Well, it turns out he was not drunk at all; he was looking at his cell phone. What was so important on that phone that it made him forget that people’s lives were in his hands as he drove that truck?

Jesus is coming back. That is a guarantee. Because of that, we should always keep our eyes on him, ready and excited for his return. There are many things that take our eyes off the Savior, and most of us probably assume those things are blatant sins. But Luke 21:34 makes a shocking statement that should serve as a serious warning for us all. When it comes to dulling our spiritual senses, the worries of this life are just as dangerous as drunkenness! Focusing on all the concerns and anxieties of everyday life will dull your spiritual senses every bit as much as if you were so inebriated you could hardly stand. What is so important about this life that it takes our eyes completely off the Savior? What temporary worries are more important than eternal realities? This world is difficult; there is no doubt about that. But you really only have two options: keep your eyes on the Savior and let the concerns of this world fade away, or keep your eyes on this world and let your relationship with the Savior fade away. Be sober. Be Ready. Jesus is coming!

Heavenly Father, we are so sorry for putting our earthly concerns before our heavenly relationship. Give us the wisdom to keep our eyes fixed on You, ready for the return of our Savior.

“So I said to you: Don’t be terrified or afraid of them! The Lord your God who goes before you will fight for you, just as you saw him do for you in Egypt. And you saw in the wilderness how the Lord your God carried you as a man carries his son all along the way you traveled until you reached this place. But in spite of this you did not trust the Lord your God, who went before you on the journey to seek out a place for you to camp. He went in the fire by night and in the cloud by day to guide you on the road you were to travel.” – Deuteronomy 1:29-32

My kids are at the age where they are starting to make some really important, life-changing decisions. One is starting to think about serious boy-girl relationships for the first time, one is stepping into some pretty big leadership roles, one is struggling with God’s call on her life, and one is going to get married this summer. In each of these situations, my wife and I try to give the very best guidance we can. We love them unconditionally, we have no selfish motives, and we have sacrificed so much for them. Though definitely not perfect, overall, I think my wife and I have been very good parents. But even with all that being said, it is amazing how skeptical they can be with our advice. Sometimes it hurts a little bit that, after all we have done, they still don’t always trust us.

Ask yourself this question: how much does God have to do before you will trust him? How many rescues, how many sacrifices, and how many miracles would it take for you to finally say, “Okay God, I will now wholeheartedly trust you with everything.” Trust is hard, and it must be earned. But if anyone has earned it, God has! The one who gave his own son for us would never harm us or withhold any good thing (Romans 8:32). If there was ever a perfect reason to trust, the Cross is it!

God, bring to mind all Your amazing acts. Most of all, keep our eyes fixed on the Cross. And in that, teach us to trust You fully in everything.

“Never let loyalty and faithfulness leave you. Tie them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will find favor and high regard with God and people.” – Proverbs 3:3-4

What would you think of a man who is loyal to his wife only when it is convenient? What would you think of a woman who is faithful to her husband only when she feels like it. They claim, “we love each other deeply!” but in practice, they do not give each other any sort of priority or make any kind of sacrifice. We would probably say, “You can’t even call that faithfulness!” A faithfulness that gives no real priority to the other is not faithfulness. It is a ridiculous claim! It denies the very definition of “faithfulness.”

Unfortunately, many of us are guilty of this shallow faithfulness to our God. We say we are faithful to God, but in reality, he is extremely low on our list of priorities. This truth is probably nowhere more blatant than in our lack of dedication to His Church. On Sunday morning, Bible study, prayer, fellowship, and worship all come together in one place. This is why God commands us to never forsake these meetings (Hebrews 10:25). But showing up on Sunday morning can easily be interrupted by the simplest of inconveniences. We attend when it is simple, easy, and what we “feel” like doing that day. That kind of faithfulness is no faithfulness at all! We should give the first and best of every week to God. Before all other activities, all other concerns, and all other responsibilities, we should honor God on Sunday morning. My love for my wife is not really shown by the number of gifts I buy her, the number of times I hug her, or the nice words I say. The true test of love is faithfulness.

Almighty God and loving heavenly Father, forgive us for our unfaithfulness. Forgive us for forsaking You for simple things when You are the one who sacrificed everything for us. Break our hearts and fill us with a passion to honor You with our first and best every Sunday.
