First Church of God, Princeton West Virginia

First Church of God, Princeton West Virginia Years ago a Kentucky pastor named William C. Neace was returning to his Lexington church after hospital visitation. This is what we are working to become.

A red light (that had always previously been green) stopped him at an intersection. Bill saw an old building, set off from the world, that he had never noticed before. Above the door of the aged structure was a sign with fairly large letters:

THERE IS NO PLACE
ANYWHERE NEAR THIS PLACE
LIKE THIS PLACE
SO THIS MUST BE THE PLACE

The saying stuck in Bill's mind as he drove back to Eastland Parkway C

hurch of God. He thought:

"It reminded me of this text of Scripture [in Acts 4:31] where it says, "And when they had prayed the place was shaken"—shaken by God's power. And I began to wonder what it would be like if all our people in the congregation there would determine that there would be no place anywhere near our place like our place, and that people all around would come to know that our place was the place of God's blessing." We here at First Church want to be a place in the two Virginias where people can experience God's Word and his Spirit directly and be blessed by his presence; we don't think we're better than other churches and we're not in competition with anyone—we believe every Bible-believing congregation should have this desire. Please give us the opportunity to bless you personally—literally to speak blessing over you —in the name of Jesus. With close to 80 paved and lined parking spaces (not counting the secondary paved parking lot) we have plenty of room for you. And welcome home!

I've been given some good advice down through the years. Among the many "golden nuggets" I've received came from an older minister who said that a pastor needs to have a "cool head, a warm heart, and a tough hide". He was right and I have sought diligently to put that into practice. But what about when the advice isn't quite so good? Like when someone suggests you should invest in Beanie Babies for your retirement? (No, I didn't do that.) Or that if you want to make a luxury purchase, go ahead and swipe that credit card even if you don't have the money? (Ok, I may have done that one a few or more times.) What do you do with bad advice? Job teaches us a little about this. Let's take a closer look at that in this lesson. Thanks for tuning in!

Have you ever held a strong opinion about something only to have your mind changed by life experiences? I have! Especially when it comes to parenting. Before I had kids, I had a LOT of parenting advice. After my two kids came into this world, I had significantly LESS advice to offer. The realities of parenting had a way reshaping my opinions about it.

Parenting is not the only area of life where that happened for me. It also happened in the area of grief. When it came to grief, I don't think I had a lot of strongly formed opinions about it, but I definitely had some uninformed perspectives. That changed drastically after I suffered my first close loss of a loved one. That experience taught me, among other things, that I had a lot more to learn about grieving.

Tonight's lesson takes a look at Job's grief. Let me warn you, it's not pretty. It is, however, honest. Leth's see what we can learn together. Thanks for tuning in!
