Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day, is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.

The "Labor Day Holiday" is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being. After many political movements, on June 28, 1894, congress passed an Act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday. Thus, instead of "laboring" on Labor Day, many take the day to travel, visit loved ones, picnic, go boating, go fishing, attend a baseball or football game, or simply lounging around at home or in the back yard.

Did you know, as Christians, we are to be "laboring" for God's Kingdom? Our Christian life is not meant to be one of leisure; rather, it is one of labor for the Lord. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:58, "My beloved brothers, be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

Well ... what an interesting past three weeks! After this last storm ... one that most of us have never seen ... everyone has a story to tell.
Everyone knows where they were when the powerful winds hit.
Many suffered devastating losses, others only minor damage.

Whatever the case, we were all in this together.

One thing is certain ... nature is powerful; nothing can stop it, and nothing gets in its way. Not only is nature powerful on the earth, but nature is powerful beneath the earth's surface as well. Underground pressure works to turn muddy rocks into brilliant gems. The earth, and the natural forces around it, are in motion and working constantly.

In the same way, as Christians, God and the mighty force of the Holy Spirit, is (or should be) constantly working in our lives. It is the power and strength of the Holy Spirit that molds us and shapes us and conforms us to the image of Christ.

Yes, nature is powerful. But the Holy Spirit is so much more powerful. Allow Him to create in you a new heart and life totally committed to Christ.

As summer "winds down," and as the kids prepare to return to school this week, I have been asking myself this question over and over:
"What's next?" "What's next for GBC?" Do you ever think about what's next for your church? Do you ever wonder what God has in store for us in the near future and in the distant future? Do you ever contemplate where you fit in as to the future of our church?

I believe we are at a crossroad. Our church has been in existence for almost 70 years. (Our 70th anniversary will be this November 19th).
A lot has happened during those 70 years. Unbelievable changes have happened in our society and community during that time. Hundreds of people have attended our church. Hundreds have served and worked here. Hundreds have given their money and time. Hundreds have been saved and baptized.
Truly God's hand has been upon this ministry. But what's next? I don't know about you, but I am excited for what God is going to do at GBC in the near future and for years to come! May God continue to bless Grace Baptist Church!

This morning, please welcome back Brother Steve Kendall and his wonderful wife, Mary. Brother Steve has been here several times when I have been away.
One thing about Brother Steve... he will always preach God's Word! He truly has the gift of evangelism and preaching. I am sure you will be blessed as he brings God's message for the hour.
Miss Jean and I are in Kentucky attending my family reunion. We will be with you again next Sunday.
