It is very interesting that Solomon states, "I said in my heart" and that he wanted to test himself in the area of pleasure. Now, pleasure is often seen differently by people. There is no holding back with Solomon as he wisely sought out wine. He helped the economy by building great houses. He helped the environment by planting vineyards, gardens, parks, trees. and pools for the trees. He also bought slaves and produced slaves who would helped with his herds and flocks. Solomon did not stop at the basic, but filled his home with silver, gold, and treasures. Solomon also knew how to throw a party as he had singers and concubines. Solomon came to the point where he held back nothing pleasurable and felt like it was due payment for all his hard work. Through all of this he found life to be empty showing you can everything and it does not lead to any kind of real joy or happiness in life.
As we live in a very wealthy country may we see how true the word of Solomon is and may we see that serving God is the greatest duty of man.
