Faith and Film: A Hidden Life
Sunday, May 31, 9:15 AM, Sanctuary
It is an old custom for classes at the end of a year to watch a movie. So for our last class of the year, that’s what we’ll be doing. Not, to be fair, that this is an easy movie.
We’ll be watching and then discussing A HIDDEN LIFE, the true story of Austrian farmer and soldier Franz Jagerstatter. When the N***s rose to power, Jagerstatter refused to pledge loyalty to Hi**er, a stance grounded in his devout Christian faith. That refusal costs him his life. It’s a film by visual auteur Terrence Malick, which means it’s beautiful and subtle and not short. It’s a visceral exploration of what faith can cost, and worth the time and patience.
Course Requirements: As it’s waaay too long to watch in class, class participants can watch the film at home, then come ready to discuss what they’ve seen.
Where to See It: It’s available to stream at modest cost on Fandango, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Google Play Movies. If you’d rather watch it on physical media, there are three copies of the DVD in the Montgomery County Public Library System.
Class Schedule: May 31, 2026: Having watched the film, we’ll discuss the film
