Am Kolel, Jewish Renewal Community

Am Kolel, Jewish Renewal Community Am Kolel is a welcoming and diverse Jewish community located in Rockville, MD.

Founded in 1990 by Rabbi David Shneyer in response to requests for a more personal and responsive Judaism, Hebrew for "an inclusive people," Am Kolel was originally created as a "synagogue without walls" dedicated to meeting unmet spiritual needs in the Jewish community and responding to social issues with a progressive Jewish voice. We are an inclusive and caring community welcoming anyone seek

ing Yiddishkeit ("Jewishness"). Am Kolel seeks to bring creativity, relevance, joy, and an all embracing awareness to spiritual practice, as a path to healing our hearts and finding balance and wholeness - tikkun halev. We are a unique voice in the Jewish community, expressing a Judaism that is joyful, spiritual and responsive to social issues, and engaged in tikkun olam, repairing the world.

🎉 Am Kolel is turning 36 — Double Chai 🎉

For 36 years, this community has created an abundance of life, meaning, connection, and purpose together.

đź’™ One chai for what we build for others
Am Kolel has always believed Jewish values belong in the world. That belief has helped seed and support organizations like Jews United for Justice, the Sanctuary Retreat Center, and SongRise. It continues today with new initiatives like DC Musical Shabbat and programs that help people turn vision into action.

đź’™ One chai for our community
We show up for one another. We celebrate Shabbat, we hold each other in life’s milestones, and we keep finding new ways to bring Jewish life, justice, and healing into the world. This year we are also piloting OLAMOT, a Jewish Wellness Festival, as we continue to grow and evolve together.

Thirty-six years in, we are not winding down. We are building forward.

As we look toward the next chapter, we are asking our community to help raise $50,000 this summer to sustain and strengthen the work ahead.

Am Kolel's June 2026 Annual Appeal
Celebrating 36 Years of Building Community & Pursuing Justice

This year, Am Kolel turns 36 — Double Chai. In Jewish tradition, a double chai means an abundance of life. And that’s exactly what this community has created together over thirty-six years: an abundance of life, of meaning, and of purpose.

This Appeal supports all the various Am Kolel programs such as holiday celebrations, outreach and adult education and their associated operating and administrative costs.
