Organized crime is driving the illicit drug trade with terrible consequences for people around the world. The drug trade is tied with other crimes such as human trafficking, and is further connected with poverty, exploitation, and addiction.

Prayer: St. Mark Ji Tianxiang was a doctor who developed an addiction to opioids during an illness. Despite being looked down upon by his community and even being denied absolution (and thus unable to receive the Blessed Sacrament), he remained a faithful confessor and Mass-attendee until his martyrdom. Try to begin regularly attending one extra Mass a week than you usually do, and pray through St. Mark’s intercession for those suffering from addiction and drug abuse.

Action: Build up a community coalition to grow grassroots support to reduce the supply and demand of illegal drugs. By building awareness and education into our communities and families, we can make it easier for people to seek help before addiction sets in.

Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr. has asked for a 9-month novena on the 25th of each month, February-October. The novena is intended to encourage prayer to end the threats to human dignity in the state of Missouri. Bishop Johnston specifically requests prayer related to continuing concerns in our community impacting immigrant families amid the ongoing surge in deportation efforts.

Additionally, later this year, voters in Missouri will once again be asked to address abortion laws in our state, particularly the loosening of restrictions that have long protected women in Missouri. We will be sharing more on this issue in the coming months, asking the faithful to vote "yes" on Amendment 3 in 2026.

The feast of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More kicks off Religious Freedom Week.

St. John Fisher was a university proctor and bishop (and very briefly cardinal) during the reigns of King Henry VII and his son, King Henry VIII, who he is said to have tutored. St. John actively preached against Lutheranism and against the king’s attempt to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. After King Henry VIII secretly went through a form of marriage with Anne Boleyn, Fisher was arrested. Like St. Thomas More, St. John used a clause in the oath of succession to stay quiet regarding the king’s attempt to be considered the head of the Church of England, but was betrayed by Richard Rich, who managed to get St. John to acknowledge his denial of the king’s headship of the Church.

St. John was sentenced to death and was due to be hanged, drawn, and quartered, but the king realized he couldn’t be allowed to live past the feast of his name patron, St. John the Baptist on June 24th. Instead, he was beheaded on June 22nd…but this still allowed parallels to be drawn to St. John the Baptist’s own beheading.
