In 1901, a Durham physician named Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore opened the doors of Lincoln Hospital, the first hospital in the city built to serve Black patients. 🏥 At a time when Black North Carolinians were routinely denied care at white-run hospitals, Moore's hospital offered something that had simply not existed before: a place where Black doctors could train, practice, and treat patients with dignity.

Moore was far more than a physician. He was one of the founding forces behind North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, which grew into the largest Black-owned business in America and helped build the foundation of what became known as Durham's Black Wall Street. He believed that health, education, and economic opportunity were deeply connected, and he spent his career building institutions that addressed all three.

Lincoln Hospital trained generations of Black doctors and nurses in North Carolina at a time when medical schools and hospitals across the South closed their doors to them. It became a cornerstone of the Hayti community in Durham, a source of both practical care and civic pride.

Moore's name is not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, but the institutions he helped build shaped opportunity for Black North Carolinians for generations. 🩺
