We finished Jonah this weekend. And spoiler alert: the ending is kind of a mess.
Jonah obeyed God. Nineveh repented. God showed mercy.
That should have been the happy ending.
Except Jonah was angry about it.
He was willing to deliver God's message, but he wasn't willing to have God's heart. He wanted grace for himself...but judgment for them.
Ouch. Because if we're not careful, we can do the same thing.
We love that God forgives us. We celebrate that God gives us another chance. We're grateful His mercy covers our failures.
But what about them?
The person who hurt us. The person we disagree with. The person whose choices make us angry. The person we're convinced doesn't deserve another chance.
Jonah reminds us that God's grace was never ours to ration.
And maybe that's the biggest lesson from these four weeks: Jonah isn't really a story about a man and a whale. It's a story about God.
A God who didn't give up on Jonah. A God who didn't give up on Nineveh. And a God whose grace, mercy and love reach much farther than ours do.
Thank God for that. ❤️
