👂✨ The Ears: The Gateway of Influence & Obedience👂✨
Over the past few weeks, we've been exploring what I've come to call the "Guarding the Gates" series—discovering that God designed the human body not only with incredible scientific precision, but also with spiritual lessons that invite us into deeper discipleship.
We began with The Skin, our 1st COVERING & BOUNDARY, asking:
🛡️ "What am I allowing access to?"
Then we moved to The Eyes, the gateway of PERCEPTION, asking:
👁️ "How am I seeing?"
Now we arrive at what I believe is one of the most important gates of all...
The EARS.
Not simply the ability to hear...
But the voices we allow to influence our hearts.
One of the greatest revelations I encountered while studying this week came from the Hebrew word Shema (שְׁמַע).
In our modern culture, we often think hearing simply means listening.
But that is not so in the Hebrew mindset...
To hear was to respond in Hebrew culture.
To hear was to OBEY!!
Faithful hearing was never passive.
It was transformational.
So how can we know this and not immediately think of Jesus.
Remember when He was tempted in the wilderness and Satan spoke?
Jesus HEARD every temptation!
Yet He refused to let another voice become more authoritative than the voice of His Father!!!
Each temptation was answered with the truth of God's Word!
Not emotion, or opinion, or circumstance
but TRUTH!
Then I thought...... hearing a lie is not the same as believing a lie.
Out attention is constantly being bombarded with competing voices.
So something we have to ask ourselves is:
Which voice has earned the right to shape the way we live?
Scripture tells us:
"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
— Romans 10:17
Faith doesn't grow by accident.
It grows as we continually receive--> trust--> and respond to God's Word.
As I studied the anatomy of the ear, I couldn't help but notice another beautiful picture.
The outer ear receives.
The narrow ear canal directs what continues inward.
The eardrum responds.
The smallest bones amplify.
The cochlea transforms vibration into meaning.
Even physically, our ears illustrate a process:
What enters... is transformed... and ultimately shapes understanding!!
Spiritually, the same principle challenges me.
Every day we are surrounded by voices.
Culture. News. Fear. Comparison. Our own inner dialogue. The opinions of others.
And the still, quiet voice of God (the only one that matters)
Every voice is competing for influence.
Because what we repeatedly hear eventually begins to shape what we believe.
And what we believe eventually shapes how we live.
Perhaps that's why Scripture repeatedly asks not whether we have ears...
But whether we have ears to HEAR
As I think about Habakkuk 2:1, one phrase keeps capturing my attention:
I will stand upon my watch... and watch to "see" what He will say unto me.
How do you "see" what God is going to "say"?
That verse reminds me that God's voice isn't meant to just give us infromation but His voice is meant to TRANSFORM our perception!
It changes how we see Him.
How we see ourselves.
And how we see the world around us.
As you reflect this week, I'd love to leave you with three questions:
👂 Who has my ear more than God?
👂 What voices have quietly shaped the way I think about myself?
👂 If my life reflects what I have been listening to... what story is it telling?
As this journey continues, there is something I want you to keep in mind
What enters... shapes perception.
Perception... influences belief.
Belief... determines behavior.
May we become people who intentionally guard every gate God has entrusted to us, learning to recognize—and obey—the voice of the Good Shepherd above every other voice.
