Fringes: a feminist, non-zionist havurah

Fringes: a feminist, non-zionist havurah Fringes: a feminist, non-zionist havurah in Philadelphia since 2007 We define as feminist because we challenge power structures around gender, race, and class.

Fringes: a feminist, non-zionist havurah was developed as a response to the challenge posed by theologian Rachel Adler: "if we don't mean what we say when we are praying, what are we doing?" In Fringes, we use the structure of the traditional Jewish morning service, but our prayers are poems and songs--we believe that prayers should sing and songs should pray. We define as non-zionist because our

Jewish lives are centered here in Philadelphia, and because we believe all lands are holy and all people are chosen.

Our liturgy helped us move between those poles of our daily lives. You can download our liturgy slides here....

Fringes January 2026: to make hope possible

We met for shabbat morning service after a devastating week of living in/watching cities invaded by heavily armed, violent, murderous thugs who have been given permission to terrorize and murder. In this storm, we gathered within the power of our community, the welcome of a space where our grief and fear are holy, and the strength of Jewish tradition, which has comforted generations of our ancestors through times like this....
