Annual Sessions will take place July 22-26 at Cheyney University and on Zoom. We are grateful to be partnering with Cheyney – The first Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Cheyney University was founded in part with a grant from a Quaker family. This partnership is an opportunity to nourish meaningful relationships. Friends are invited to join as a community – either in person or online – based on what works best for you.

PYM staff and volunteers from throughout our yearly meeting community organized an event to recognize the legacy and generosity of Anna T. Jeanes, a Quaker philanthropist whose support played a critical role in many social movements, including healthcare, education, and care for aging Friends.

Dozens gathered at Stapeley Hall in Philadelphia, PA, to hear about how her giving continues to have an impact today and learn how we can follow in her footsteps through our own giving.

We are especially grateful to the volunteers and panelists who brought the event to life: Kay Sackett, Martin Ogletree, Raymond Pearce, Kerry Roeder, and Mimi Blackwell.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting is a member of the National Council of Churches (NCC), a coalition of faith communities that works together on issues that affect people facing hardship. Through this affiliation, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting stays connected with other churches and shared efforts that reach beyond our region.

The NCC began in the 1950s and represents a wide network in the United States, often described as serving about 45 million people across more than 100,000 congregations. This shared fellowship gives Philadelphia Yearly Meeting another way to engage alongside other faith communities on matters of national concern.

Gathering May 11–14 at the Lutheran Center in Chicago, the National Council of Churches (NCC) Spring Governing Board convened under a timely theme: “Peacemaking as Ecumenical Witness in a Divided Age.” Grounded in Scripture, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God,” (Matthew 5:9, NRSVue), the meeting called leaders to embody understanding, justice, and unity as a shared expression of faith.

Participants were invited to reflect on the NCC’s calling to “live as a community of communions” committed to advancing God’s peace and healing in the world. In a time marked by division and fracture, the gathering emphasized that peacemaking is not passive, but rather, a courageous and disciplined act, one that requires humility and a willingness to build bridges across difference.

"We are glad they are hosting The Journey to Freedom traveling exhibit at the Old Kennett Meetinghouse, which was a stop on the Underground Railroad," Chris Mohr, the general secretary of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends, said. "All along the walk, we believe Harriet Tubman's quiet but powerful presence will provide a beacon of hope and inspiration to everyone who visits."

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, one historian is marking the occasion with a journey along the Underground Railroad.
