Yesterday, Archbishop Paul Coakley, USCCB president, and Bishop Daniel Flores, USCCB vice president, met with Pope Leo XIV. They were joined by Msgr. Michael J.K. Fuller, USCCB general secretary, and Father Paul Hartmann, Associate General Secretary. Their meeting was part of the Conference’s annual visit made to the Curia offices. The USCCB is grateful for the opportunities that our bishops have to spend time with our Holy Father and assure him of our support and prayers, while also updating him on the Church in the United States.

"no one can live continually in sin and continue to pray the rosary; either he will give up the sin or he will give up the rosary." ~Bishop Hugh C. Boyle (1873–1950)
Diocese of Pittsburgh

The quote expresses a common Catholic theological sentiment regarding persistent prayer and interior transformation, closely echoing a similar reflection by Blessed Fulton J. Sheen:

"One of two things will happen: either he will stop saying the Rosary, or he will get the gift of faith."

⚔️ What is the Underdog’s Weapon?

Tonight, our youth will reflect on the power of the Rosary and how God gives us spiritual weapons for the battles we face every day.

On this Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, we’ll look at the story of the Battle of Lepanto, the power of prayer, and what it means to turn to God when we feel outnumbered or overwhelmed. 🙏

Please keep our youth in your prayers as they gather tonight! 💙

7 DE OCTUBRE

FIESTA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL ROSARIO

Padre Celestial,

DO YOU MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS TOO QUICKLY?

You probably make the Sign of the Cross every day. Here are three things you may not know about one of the oldest Catholic prayers.

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Most Catholics have said those words thousands of times. We make the Sign of the Cross before Mass, before meals, when we pray, and perhaps many other times throughout the day. But because we do it so often, it can become almost automatic.

Here are three things to remember the next time you “cross yourself”:

1. THE SIGN OF THE CROSS IS A SACRAMENTAL

The Catechism describes sacramentals as sacred signs instituted by the Church that help prepare us to receive grace and sanctify the circumstances of our lives (CCC 1667). Holy water, blessed medals, crucifixes, and rosaries can all be sacramentals. So can the Sign of the Cross!

2. IT IS A PRAYER ALL BY ITSELF

We aren't simply making the shape of a cross. As we say, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” we invoke the Holy Trinity while tracing the instrument of Christ's sacrifice over our bodies. We should make the Sign of the Cross SLOWLY and say it with intention.

3. THE EARLIEST CHRISTIANS DID IT THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Around the beginning of the third century, Christians would trace the cross during the ordinary activities of life: when coming and going, getting dressed, sitting down to eat, and even going to bed.

St. Cyril later encouraged Christians to make the cross boldly over the bread they ate and the cups they drank, when leaving and returning home, before sleeping, upon waking, while traveling, and while resting. This simple gesture is both a prayer and a visible profession of our faith in Christ.

In other words, the Sign of the Cross wasn't reserved for church.

LET US NOT BE ASHAMED TO CONFESS THE CRUCIFIED

It is one of the shortest prayers we know, and probably one of the prayers we say most often. But we shouldn’t rush through words that invoke the Holy Trinity and recall the Cross of Christ.

SLOW DOWN YOUR SIGN OF THE CROSS

The next time you begin to pray, don't rush through the Sign of the Cross. Say each word deliberately and remember exactly Whom you are invoking.
