Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these". This central Christian teaching is found in the Gospels of Matthew 19:14, Mark 10:14, and Luke 18:16.

Somehow the historic old church bell seems to sound best when rung by little ones, as it was today! Rev. Patrice Goodwin had a wonderful children's message this morning about how we can all show God's love by offering encouragement to others. And then an inspiring sermon about Jesus's example and encouragement for His followers to show courage in the face of evil.

This Sunday, Kevin Raye will be leading our 10:30 a.m. worship service, with a message entitled “God’s Assurances”.

We are remembering with love Gail Allen who, along with her late husband Jack, were cherished members of our church family during the many years they had a summer home on Shore Road. Gail passed away Sunday morning in Rome, Georgia. Gail's obituary is pasted below and her son Michael has let us know that her funeral service will be live-streamed on Facebook at 2:00 p.m. this Thursday from Summerville First United Methodist Church. We are saddened by her passage from this life, but know she is rejoicing in heaven to be reunited with Jack, and that they are with the Lord they loved and served so well.

"What a Friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear—
All because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer."

This hymn, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" (number 526 in The United Methodist Hymnal) has been a source of comfort for many--including its author. Joseph Scriven sent the words of the hymn to his mother while she was sick. He himself soon fell ill and died under strange circumstances. While Scriven published dozens of hymns during his life, this one was not among them. Yet it is now his best known hymn.

Perhaps because of the familiar comfort and invitation to peace it provides?

🙏 What are you feeling led to take to take to God in prayer today?

Deacon Gail White led our service today, preaching on the test of Abraham's faith with the binding of Isaac, found in Genesis 22. Gail and her sister Dale, who was our reader today, sang an a ca****la version of "God Will Make A Way."

Among those lifted up in prayer today was Cynthia Adams, who is recovering from hip replacement surgery after suffering a broken hip. We sang "Happy Birthday" to Gary Nixon and Joyce Garland, both of whom have birthdays this week, and enjoyed coffee fellowship and lots of laughter together after the service. Thanks as always to Suzanne Bechard for her beautiful flowers on the altar today!
