The History of St. Leonard of Port Maurice Church ⛪
The history of our parish dates back to the late 19th century. In 1900, the parish purchased the former Independent School District No. 10 school building and began using it as a church. On May 31, 1901, the first church was solemnly dedicated.
As the community grew, a new church building became necessary. Construction began in August 1951 under the direction of Father Vincent Santo. After three years of work and the generous efforts of many parishioners, the new church was completed.
On August 25, 1954, our present St. Leonard of Port Maurice Church was solemnly dedicated. A solemn liturgical celebration marked this important moment in the history of our parish. Father Paul L. Lansing celebrated the Mass, Father Frederick Kampsen served as deacon, and Father James Minette as subdeacon. Bishop Bartholome delivered the festive sermon.
Today, we give thanks to God for the faith of those who came before us and for all those who have helped build and sustain our parish community throughout the years.
This year, we joyfully celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the dedication of our church, which took place on August 25, 1954.
