Easter is not just a day; it is a season! In fact, it is fifty days in length and seven weeks in duration. It is often called the Great Fifty Days. It is the most festive season of the Christian year. Hence, all of the joy of Easter Day will be acknowledged for much longer than a visitor to worship experiences on just one day each year. This year Easter Day is April 16 and the Seventh Sunday of Easter is May 28. So you can see there is much time to celebrate both the resurrection of Christ and to experience the power of Christ’s resurrection in our lives.
As those who live in temperate climate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, this time of the year also coincides with the meteorological season of Spring. Hence, the awakening of our minds and spirits to God’s resurrection power is re-enforced by all of the glory of God’s creative power, providing us many visual reminders of what God has done. The return of migratory birds, the budding of trees, the growth of flowers, the birthing of the young, all proclaim the power and providence of God.
It is my hope that this year you will again pause to rejoice in God’s great work in the world at two levels: the new life of nature you see all around you and the new life we have through Jesus Christ our Lord. That might mean more walks in nature; that might also mean more trips to church on Sunday.
Remember Easter is a season, not just a day!
In Christ,
Pastor Don
