Wednesday — Goodness Is Not Image Management

Read: Matthew 23:25–28

Jesus had little patience for people who looked holy on the outside while neglecting what was happening within.

That is still worth hearing.

Church folk can get very good at appearances.

The right language.

The right clothes.

The right title.

The right smile.

But goodness is not performance.

Goodness is what remains when nobody is watching.

It is the private life lining up with the public testimony.

Something to think about: Is there any place where I am more concerned with looking good than actually being good?

Let’s pray: God, make my inner life and outer life agree. Amen.

Tuesday — Goodness Does the Right Thing

Read: Micah 6:8

Sometimes goodness is not complicated.

Do what is right.

Love mercy.

Walk humbly with God.

That sounds simple until doing right costs us something.

Goodness is not just knowing what is right.

It is choosing what is right when compromise would be easier.

It is telling the truth when a lie would protect us.

It is doing the honorable thing when nobody is watching.

Something to think about: Where am I being asked to choose what is right rather than what is easiest?

Let’s pray: God, give me courage to do what is right even when it costs me comfort. Amen.

Goodness: When What’s in You Becomes Good for Somebody Else

Previewing the Sixth Fruit | Galatians 5:22–23

Monday — Goodness Is Fruit

Read: Galatians 5:22–23

Good morning, friends.

We have walked through love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness. Now Paul brings us to goodness.

Goodness can sound vague. We say somebody is “a good person,” but what do we actually mean?

The Fruit of the Spirit pushes us deeper. Goodness is not about looking respectable. It is about Holy Spirit forming something in us that becomes life-giving, trustworthy, and useful for the good of others.

Goodness is not a label we give ourselves.

It is something people experience because of who we are becoming.

Something to think about: If someone experienced my life this week, what would feel genuinely good because I was present?

Let’s pray: Holy Spirit, form goodness in me that becomes a blessing to somebody else. Amen.

Saturday — Open Hands, Not Empty Hands

Read: Luke 6:38

Tomorrow we’re going to talk about generosity.

And I want to clear something up before we get there.

Generosity does not mean letting everybody drain you dry.

We’ve already learned that love has boundaries.

Kindness has boundaries.

Generosity does too.

God is not asking you to become empty so everybody else can remain full.

Healthy generosity asks:

What has God entrusted to me, and how can I steward it so that it produces good beyond me?

Sometimes that means giving.

Sometimes sharing.

Sometimes investing.

Sometimes teaching.

Sometimes saying, “I can help you this far, but I cannot carry the whole thing.”

Open hands are not the same thing as empty hands.

Something to think about: What would wise, joyful generosity look like in my life right now?

Let’s pray: God, make me generous without making me careless, open without losing wisdom, and willing to share what you have entrusted to me. Amen.

Preparing for Sunday

Our Fruit of the Spirit journey continues:

LOVE → JOY → PEACE → PATIENCE → KINDNESS → GENEROSITY

And I think the line worth carrying into Sunday is:

God did not bless the orchard so the trees could admire their own fruit.

The deeper sermon question becomes:

Who is being nourished because God has placed something good in my hands?

Friday — See the Holiness in People

Read: Galatians 5:22–23, MSG

Here is the phrase from The Message that has stayed with me:

“a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people.”

What changes when I look at another person and believe there is something sacred about their humanity?

I cannot easily dismiss you.

Use you.

Ignore you.

Reduce you to what you can do for me.

Generosity becomes more than giving somebody something.

It becomes treating people as though their lives have value.

Sometimes generosity is making room.

Sometimes it is listening without rushing.

Sometimes it is sharing credit.

Sometimes it is giving somebody the opportunity nobody gave you.

Something to think about: Who might I treat differently if I deliberately remembered the sacred worth in them?

Let’s pray: God, help me recognize your image in people I might otherwise overlook. Amen.

Thursday — Scarcity Makes Us Clench Our Fists

Read: 2 Corinthians 9:6–8

Can we talk for a minute?

Sometimes generosity is difficult because we are afraid.

What if I give and then I don’t have enough?

What if I share the opportunity and somebody passes me?

What if I teach them everything I know and they don’t need me anymore?

What if I open my hand and lose what I’ve worked so hard to hold?

Scarcity says:

Hold tight. Protect yours. There may not be enough.

Grace teaches us another posture.

Open hands.

Not foolish hands.

Not irresponsible hands.

Open hands.

Generosity is not giving away what you need to survive. It is refusing to let fear turn everything God gave you into something you must clutch.

Something to think about: Where has fear made me hold too tightly?

Let’s pray: God, give me wisdom about what to keep, courage about what to release, and freedom from fear-driven scarcity. Amen.

Wednesday — Generosity Is Bigger Than Money

Read: Acts 3:1–8

Peter tells the man at the gate:

“Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee.”

Sometimes we hear “generosity” and immediately reach for our wallets.

Money matters. Churches need resources. People have material needs.

But money is not the only thing we possess.

You can be generous with attention.

Generous with knowledge.

Generous with forgiveness.

Generous with encouragement.

Generous with your seat at the table.

Generous by opening a door for somebody coming behind you.

The question isn’t only, “How much can I give?”

Sometimes the question is:

“What do I already have that could bless somebody?”

Something to think about: What do I possess besides money that I could give more freely?

Let’s pray: God, show me the resources in my life that I have overlooked because they don’t come with a dollar sign. Amen.

Tuesday — An Orchard Doesn’t Eat Its Own Fruit

Read: Galatians 5:22–23, MSG

The Message says God brings gifts into our lives “much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard.”

Think about an orchard.

The tree receives soil, rain, sunlight, and nourishment—and then produces something somebody else can eat.

We’ve said this throughout the series:

Fruit is not produced merely for the benefit of the tree.

Generosity asks:

Who is being nourished because God has blessed me?

Not just financially.

Who receives your time?

Your encouragement?

Your wisdom?

Your experience?

Your connections?

Your patience?

Your presence?

Something to think about: What fruit has God grown in me that someone else could use?

Let’s pray: God, don’t let me hoard what you meant to become nourishment for somebody else. Amen.
