Shavuah Tov from Buenos Aires! 🇦🇷

What a week. Our Temple Judea family has been walking through the story of Argentina and its Jewish community, and I cannot stop thinking about how much we have seen, learned, and felt together.

We stood in silence at AMIA, where 85 lives were taken in the bombing of 18 July 1994. We said Kaddish in their memory. And then we looked up at the vibrant colors of Yaacov Agam's sculpture, a reminder that this community chose life and chose to rebuild. We were in awe from the murals of Memoria y Justicia, memory and justice, that are still painted on the wall more than thirty years later, because this community refuses to forget.

We walked Plaza de Mayo, where the white headscarves of the Mothers still mark the ground, remembering the disappeared. We wandered the streets of Recoleta and Palermo seeing amazing parks, and a mix of architecture. We saw “Eva’s balcony” and grave as we learned so much about the fascinating history of this country, were the Jewish story played a central role. And on Friday night, we welcomed Shabbat with the local Jewish community, singing familiar melodies with an Argentine accent, strangers who felt like family within minutes.

Everywhere we go, the same lesson: memory is not a burden. It is a blessing we carry forward.

Thank you to everyone on this journey for your open hearts. We can't wait to share more when we return home. (And yes- The steaks and w**e are Great!)

¡Simchat Torah! The Next Generation Celebrates in Style

If anything could rival our adult Simchat Torah celebration, it was the one our Religious School families threw. A mariachi band led the festivities from start to finish, and from the moment the trumpets and guitars started playing, students, parents, and teachers were clapping, singing, and dancing with the Torah.

The heart of the day was Consecration, as we welcomed our newest students into a lifetime of Jewish learning and recognizing our 4th graders with certificates marking their next step on the path toward B'nei Mitzvah. It was a proud moment for our students, their families, and the teachers who guide them.

Thank you to our students, families, faculty, and everyone who helped make the celebration so special. Simchat Torah is a reminder that learning and joy go hand in hand, and our school showed that beautifully.

TJ's Joyous Judaism: Simchat Torah, Adult Style

On Saturday, October 3rd, Temple Judea celebrated Simchat Torah the way only TJ can. Our Joyous Judaism gathering brought adults together for an evening of music, food, and Torah, and the energy in the room showed just how much our community loves to celebrate together.

A lively klezmer band set the tone from the first note, filling the space with the music that has accompanied Jewish joy for generations. Guests enjoyed refreshments provided by the Rabbis, and then we did what Simchat Torah is all about: we sang our way through the Torah, marking the end of one reading cycle and the beginning of the next.

What happens when a church and a synagogue share a sukkah? Great conversation, good questions, and a whole lot of Torah!

This week, our friends from Good Shepherd Church and Father Sanford Groff joined Rabbi Yaron under the open roof of our sukkah for an interfaith Bible study. We traced Sukkot from Leviticus to the Christian scriptures, explored why we shake the lulav, and even found a surprising connection between Sukkot and Palm Sunday. (Hint: "Hosanna" has Hebrew roots!)

In this year of "Love your neighbor as yourself," it was a joy to open our sukkah to our neighbors and learn together.

Every Thursday at 9:30 am, something special happens at Temple Judea. Forget the "grandfather minyan" you may remember from childhood, where a few old men mumbled through the prayers as fast as they could. Our minyan is filled with music, spirituality, and gratitude. It is a circle of people who show up for one another, especially for those who are mourning and need a community to say Kaddish with them.

Tradition teaches that the Book of Life is finally sealed this weekend. Before it closes, why not add one small resolution for the new year? Come join us, even just once, and see for yourself.

What a sweet Sukkot we've had at Temple Judea!

On Friday, our adults gathered in the sukkah to shake the lulav, take in the fragrance of the etrog, and celebrate the season together. Then this morning, our kids had their turn, and they shook, sniffed, and snacked their way through the holiday!

Everyone got a taste of the seven species of the Land of Israel: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. Some were brave tasters, and some were very brave tasters.

On Yom Kippur we don’t pray for anything fancy. We pray to be written in.
Cantor Suzanne Leventhal sings B’Sefer Chayim at Temple Judea this Yom Kippur. It’s an ancient prayer, and it still asks for the things that matter most: blessing, peace, and a good livelihood. And it doesn’t ask for them for “me.” It asks for “us.”
