Me: It shouldn’t be this way.
God: You’re right. This world is broken.
Me: So why don’t you fix it? Why do you allow all this suffering and injustice and death?
God: Why do you keep on sinning? Why do you say you are a good person and then do things you know are wrong? This is a sin-broken world. If I stopped sin by killing everyone as soon as they committed a sin, would you like that solution?
Me: Of course not.
God: Or if I took away all consequences so that no matter what anyone did, they would never be hurt, would that make you all better people?
Me: I suppose not. We’d do even worse.
God: You would become monsters. The solution to your sin is only in me. I have given you forgiveness and the power to be better through the cross and the Spirit. But I’ve also cursed this earth. You will always endure a cursed earth until the Day I return.
Me: Why would you do that?
God: You will live with weeds and thorns and natural disasters and birth defects because I don’t want you to be satisfied with life on earth. You were made for more. This cursed world confronts you with the reality of your sin. Your pain and disappointments are necessary to prod you to seek me. I know you, and often when things are good, you forget me.
Me: But doesn’t all the pain and bad push us away from you? If you showed us your love more, it would be easier to believe that you are good.
God: More? Open your eyes. Every concept you have of goodness originated in me. The whole reason you think it should not be this way is because you perceive that it should be another, better way. This broken world is filled with the shards of Eden and hints of heaven. I placed you in a world where you can feel love and beauty and wonder. I gave you the ability to give and receive pleasure. You can sense the perfection of Eden amid the brokenness, you have enough to imagine what things were like and should be. And I promise that one day they will be perfect and beautiful and whole again. And so can you if you will just believe and seek me.
