This Sunday (8/23) is a big deal for us at Portico Church! Our worship gathering will focus on what Jesus said about entering the kingdom through The Narrow Gate. It's a pretty appropriate topic, as we have 4 people who are getting baptized this weekend! Once the worship gathering is finished, we'll head out to Streode's home for the baptism and then have lunch together after.

Hey all - if you plan to attend the baptism event and lunch this Sunday (August 23rd) please sign up by noon on Thursday (August 19th). We need to plan ahead for the set-up and food. If you know there are friends/family planning to come with you, please let us know how many you think will be coming approximately. It will help us out a lot.

This Sunday we'll look at Matthew 7:7-12 which contains what many call "The Golden Rule." But there's much more to it than that. Jesus' words tie-in closely to the section before about judging others. Be sure to join us this Sunday as we continue our Sermon on the Mount series and we'll pull it all together!

EDGE Parent and Student meeting. This is for anyone with kids heading into grades 6-12. We have some exciting things to share about EDGE this year. Even if your child hasn't attended in the past, please join us for a BRIEF meeting after church. Grab a snack from the kitchen and we'll meet up in the back classroom in the basement. Students are encouraged to attend, but it is not required.

Baptism Sunday is August 23rd! We'll head out to Stroede's home after church, do the baptisms, then have lunch together. If you are interested in being baptized, please reach out. If you are planning to attend, please sign up with our sign-up genius before Friday so we can know how many are coming and plan for enough Sloppy Joe!

This weekend at Portico Bob Whitton will be sharing a message in the Sermon on the Mount series. He will be teaching on the topic of Judging Others based on Jesus' words in Matthew 7:1-6. In a world that is so judgmental, it's pretty significant teaching. Come and hear more this Sunday!

Tornado Relief Efforts: Please consider making time to help. The window of opportunity is closing. There is still availability through Samaritan's Purse disaster relief program from 8/14-8/21. All the other days before then are full. A handful of us will be volunteering for the full day next Saturday (8/15) for anyone who can join us. https://www.spvolunteer.org/project-response/810

EDGE Youth Ministry meeting on Sunday August 16th after church. If you have a middle or high school student, whether they have attended or not, please join us for a short meeting (about 30 min. after church). We'd like to share about an exciting new direction we are looking at with EDGE. Students welcome and encouraged to come!

We are heading into August! (The summer sure does fly by, doesn't it?) On Sunday we'll be resuming our Sermon on the Mount series. This week we'll cover a topic that is pretty relevant for the events of this past week. It's all about our focus on earthly things. The theme is Anxiety and Eternity. We encourage you to join us!

No cafe connection afterwards, but we will have this:

10:45am Community Impact Vision and Prayer meeting
If you weren't able to attend the last one, you'll have another chance to hear more about an idea we are considering as a church. We will be holding this meeting downstairs instead of our regular cafe connection time. It will last about 45 minutes.

NO GAME NIGHT TONIGHT! (We had tentatively planned a game night for tonight, but it just didn't come together. Sorry for the confusion. We may plan one during the school year instead.)

We are encouraging people to help out with relief efforts from the tornado through Samaritan's Purse. (info in previous posts).

Relief efforts are underway for those affected by the tornado strike, and Samaritan’s Purse is one of the organizations working in the area. Many of you showed interest in helping with the New London floods but did not have the chance. Well, here’s another opportunity.

I was really impressed by the effort Samaritan’s Purse puts in to help people in need effectively, as well as caring for them and sharing the love of Jesus in a sensitive way. Their team leaders have the know how; you just show up be the helping hands.

Below is the link to volunteer. Minors age 14+ can help if accompanied by parent/adult. Shifts will start TODAY and run through August 21. They work 7 days each week except for Sunday mornings for church. Each shift starts with orientation at either 7:30am or 12:30pm. Work typically ends at 4:30pm.
