Today, we are introducing someone whose personal study of Scripture led him from religious tradition to a personal faith in Christ — Emmanuel Obiako.
Emmanuel was raised in a deeply committed Catholic home in Nigeria. Baptized as a baby by an Irish priest, his family faithfully observed traditions such as catechism, sacraments, and Ash Wednesday. As a young adult, he moved to England for college and graduate school. While living in England, he made a decision that changed his life forever—he began reading the King James Bible for himself.

He read the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation multiple times, simply seeking truth. He soon realized many of the doctrines he grew up with were not supported by Scripture. That led him to a Bible-believing church in London, where he was saved and later followed the Lord in believer’s baptism by immersion.

After finishing school, Emmanuel returned to Nigeria and prayed that God would lead him to a godly wife. The Lord answered that prayer through Stella, a wonderful woman who became his wife and partner in raising their four children. In 1988, their family moved to the United States, where they built their lives and raised their children in Maryland. They shared many meaningful years together before Stella was diagnosed with cancer and courageously battled the illness for six years. She passed away in 2011. Though it was an incredibly painful season, Emmanuel shares that his faith grew even stronger as he fully submitted himself to God’s will.

An unexpected blessing that took place during the COVID pandemic in 2020 was the introduction to a godly lady named Glory. They married the following year. He describes it as “a marriage made in heaven, to the glory of God.” Before coming to OBC, Emmanuel served for over fifteen years at Calverton Baptist Church, teaching children’s Sunday School and leading an ESL outreach ministry for immigrants.

While searching for a church closer to home, Emmanuel and Glory visited OBC. After only a few visits, Pastor Lacombe and his wife visited their home—this act of kindness deeply impacted them. Since then, they’ve experienced genuine love and believe God clearly led them here.

If you’re looking for a church home, Emmanuel would tell you that finding OBC was no accident—it was the Lord’s leading.
We’d love to welcome you this Sunday at Odenton Baptist Church.

Today, we are introducing someone who plays an important part in our church. He chose to follow Christ as a young adult. God moved him through several ministries and opportunities from serving in the military, ministering as a missionary in Thailand, and now leading as our pastor — Pastor John Lacombe.

Pastor Lacombe grew up in the Detroit metro area of Michigan and was a nominal Catholic, though his family did not regularly attend church. Many considered him a good kid, yet he later realized he was still a sinner in need of salvation. At nineteen he moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and it was there that he first heard the gospel clearly. Though it did not immediately change him, it caused him to think seriously about his sin. Over the next several months, he attended church and worked alongside two believers whose genuine walk with God left a lasting impression.

Still confused about salvation, he convinced himself that calling himself a Christian and trying to live a good life was enough. However, in July 1995, a coworker lovingly challenged him. During that conversation, he understood the gospel, repented, and placed his faith solely in Jesus Christ and His work. This one decision changed his life forever. After his salvation, he began growing in his local church. Soon after, he married Connie, and they began their family, welcoming their first child. He later joined the U.S. Army, and after serving in Korea, they moved to Ft. Meade in 1998, where God led them to OBC.

At OBC, he had the opportunity to receive instruction and to serve in teaching, outreach, and youth ministry. In 1999, he surrendered to preach, and in 2000, he and Connie surrendered to missions. After leaving the Army, he became the Assistant Pastor in 2003. In 2006, they left for Thailand where they were able to spend eleven years planting churches. Then in 2017, God led them back to help OBC, and in 2018 he was called as the Senior Pastor.

This photo, though not extremely flattering, captures what we see each week — Pastor Lacombe faithfully preaching God’s Word. His preaching is genuine, doctrinal, and relatable. We are grateful for a pastor committed to faithfully proclaiming Scripture.

If you’re looking for a church home, we invite you to join us this Sunday at Odenton Baptist Church. Come see a place where you can grow, serve, and belong.

Today, we are introducing someone who has been part of church life since childhood and has seen her faith strengthened over time — Melanie Teske.

Melanie grew up in a Christian home where church was a regular part of life. The day before she turned seven, she asked her mom questions about what it meant to be saved. Her mom invited the pastor’s wife to speak with her, and while Melanie doesn’t remember every detail, she remembers God changing something in her heart. Though she experienced doubts later in college, the Lord used those seasons to strengthen her and give her assurance so that today she confidently knows she is saved.

Her teenage years were shaped by both challenges and encouragement. When Melanie was thirteen, her younger sister battled cancer. It was a difficult season for their family, but by God’s grace, her sister recovered and is now in remission. During those formative years, Melanie’s youth leaders also played a significant role. Through outreach and personal investment, they helped shape her faith and love for serving in the local church.

Melanie first became familiar with Odenton Baptist Church through youth rallies with Bible competitions and preaching. Later, while attending college, she was contacted about a teaching opportunity at Odenton Christian School. After accepting the position, she moved to the area and joined Odenton Baptist Church in the summer of 2017.

Since then, she has enjoyed serving in children’s ministries and is excited to invest in the College and Career group. As shown in this photo from our Resurrection Sunday play, Melanie is always willing to step in and serve wherever needed. One of the things she appreciates most about OBC is its multicultural church family—worshiping alongside people from many different backgrounds, all growing together in Christ.

One of Melanie’s favorite things about OBC is the way the church truly becomes family. We’d love for you to experience that for yourself. Join us this Sunday at Odenton Baptist Church and see a place where you can grow, serve, and belong.
