First American Lutheran Church's Fun Fact Friday

In 1933, Reverend Edward Reiff was called as the new pastor from the St. Paul Lutheran Seminary. One of his first projects was to raise the one-time schoolhouse into a social center and meeting area.

In 1934, the hall was raised and enlarged so a basement kitchen, dining room, and furnace room could be added. The upper floor was used for Sunday School and meetings.

First American Lutheran Church's Fun Fact Friday

After 42 years of service, Revered Herman Eisenbach resigned on July 16, 1933. Records show he baptized 828 infants, confirmed 563 youths, performed 193 marriages, and officiated 300 funerals.

First American Lutheran Church's Fun Fact Friday

In July 1930, a fire (yes, another one) broke out under the church's roof, badly damaging it. Through the kindness of Trinity Lutheran Church, Oconto, services continued until the church could be rebuilt. It was dedicated in November 1930.

If you remember from our previous Fun Fact Friday post, five years prior to this fire, the Luther League took out an insurance policy on the church. This proved to be a godsend when the church faced the fire during the Depression Era.

First American Lutheran Church's Fun Fact Friday

In 1926, a Women's Missionary Society was formed out of concern that too much time and effort were being devoted to money-raising activities. They held their meetings on the second Thursday of the month, with devotion, hymn singing, business meetings, a social hour, and refreshments.

In 1932, the "Thank Offering Box" was introduced to aid in mission work. The "Thank Offering Box" is still used today, almost 100 years later.

In December of each year, they would send pounds of cookies to the nursing homes and give them as gifts to needy pastors.

First American Lutheran Church's Fun Fact Friday

"Ask not what the church can do for you, but what you can do for the church" seemed the unspoken motto of the Luther League, which in 1925 took out the first $3,000 insurance policy on the church. A $3,000 policy in 1925 is equivalent to $56,607.94 today.

Our congregation was founded in 1873 (formally on January 1, 1974), and on October 14, 1923, it celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding.
