Toxic dynamics can easily pull us out of character. When someone treats us with anger, manipulation, or constant criticism, our natural reaction is to hit back. But God calls us to a higher standard.
In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul outlines the Fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Here is how these traits protect your peace around difficult people:
Patience & Self-Control: You cannot control how a toxic person acts, but you can control your reaction. Self-control keeps you from reacting in anger.
Peace & Kindness: Kindness is not weakness. You can set firm boundaries to protect your peace while still choosing not to repay evil with evil.
Goodness & Love: Choosing love means you refuse to let someone else's toxic behavior change the goodness inside you.You cannot force a toxic person to change, but you can allow the Holy Spirit to change how you respond.Want to learn how to live out the Fruit of the Spirit in every relationship?
