IMPORTANT — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NYC DEPARTMENT OF BUILDINGS: NATURAL GAS DETECTORS REQUIRED IN COVERED RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS BY JANUARY 1, 2027
The New York City Department of Buildings (DOB), in partnership with the FDNY, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), National Grid, and Con Edison, is reminding New Yorkers about an important new home safety requirement under Local Law 102 of 2025.
WHAT HOMEOWNERS AND PROPERTY OWNERS NEED TO KNOW
By January 1, 2027, covered residential buildings with gas piping must have code-compliant natural gas alarms provided and installed in every dwelling unit.
The requirement applies to:
Apartment buildings
Private homes, including one- and two-family homes
Hotels, motels, and lodging or rooming houses
Single-room occupancy buildings
IMPORTANT DEADLINE FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
The January 1, 2027, deadline is approaching. Property owners should take the necessary steps now to ensure compliance.
Natural gas alarms may be hardwired, plugged into an electrical outlet, or battery-powered. Regardless of the type selected, property owners should verify that the alarm meets the applicable safety requirements and is properly listed to UL 1484 or UL 2075, as applicable.
FREE NATURAL GAS DETECTORS AND EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
The Department of Buildings and National Grid are conducting educational outreach events throughout all five boroughs to help property owners understand the new requirements. A limited number of free natural gas detectors will be distributed to small residential property owners attending these events, on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT A GAS LEAK
Natural gas leaks can create dangerous conditions that may lead to fires, explosions, and serious injuries.
If you smell gas or a natural gas alarm activates:
Leave the area immediately.
Move to a safe location.
Call 911 from a safe distance.
Do not ignore a suspected gas leak.
