Astoria Presbyterian Church

Astoria Presbyterian Church A Progressive, collaborative community of faith, focused on justice, peace and love of neighbor. Open We believe we can make a difference.

We work with our neighbors against racism, for LGBTQ and racial equity, to end systemic homelessness, to welcome immigrants, and to show up for justice. Through the arts, attention to care for the Earth, and a spirit of collaboration with so many who are doing tireless work in the community, we support, equip, and provide space for those making positive change in the world. We know that the church

has done a lot of harm, even with good intentions, over the centuries. Christianity has come to be seen as exclusive, judgmental, racist, self-serving and increasingly irrelevant. "Church" is thought of as a building where people go (or walk past) on a Sunday morning. Still, people are looking for something beyond themselves, for a community that cares and is working for a better world. Astoria First Presbyterian sold our buildings to make way for affordable senior housing and we're seeking to create a seamless way of being church, getting back to the way that Jesus taught--a way of love and justice that comes from deeply ancient wisdom with timeless relevance. We believe you can make a difference. Let's make a difference together.

Just as jazz singer, Billie Holiday was targeted by the FBI for refusing to stop singing the words of provocative truth in her 1939 song "Strange Fruit" we learn in Acts 5:27-32, that the religious authorities want the apostles to stop spreading Jesus’ teachings and the word of his resurrection because they, along with the apostles, could be killed for these politically threatening truths.

Join us for worship tomorrow morning either in-person or virtually at 10:30am as we explore the powerful lyrics of "Strange Fruit" and how we are called to to be witnesses, to face painful truths and proclaim what God has led us to see.

If you would like to join virtually, please email [email protected] for a link!
