Throughout the Gospel Jesus is asked between 180 and 190 questions, depending on the translation. He gives a direct response to maybe half of those questions. The rest He answers with a question of His own: “Who do you say that I am?” “Why do you call me good?” “Do you want to be healed?”

Sometimes this is called the Rabbinic method, answering a question with a question. But consider, answers can be memorized and then forgotten. Direct answers close a conversation. But questions, questions dig. They burrow beneath the surface and expose the soul. Answers satisfy mere curiosity. Questions prompt reflection and conversation.

We often come to Scripture demanding answers. The Bible is not just a vending machine dispensing yes and no answers. That requires nothing from us. Nothing of us.

Scripture maybe best serves as an interrogation room where we sit in the hot seat of both the interrogated and the hot seat of the interrogator. Seeking answers that are more than yes or no, do or don’t. Scripture shapes our attitude about God, ourselves, and our relationship with God.

Understanding Scripture as the breathed word of God, it becomes the conversation between ourselves and our beloved Creator. It is the language of love in our relationship.
