James 1:19-20 19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

“Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” ~Mark Twain

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

"It is easier to suppress the first desire than to satisfy all that follow."

Lesson in Review…How Heavy Is Your Cross?
Luke 9:18-27
The cross was an instrument of death. Those hung on the cross were considered cursed by God. On the cross, Christ was suspended between Heaven and earth.

Jesus’s teachings are often upside down when compared to the way we look at things. He healed the sick and raised the dead. Why did he ask his disciples, “Who do you say I am?”

He knew their thoughts. He needed them to say who he was and commit to what they believed. Matthew 16:18

1 Corinthians 3:11 Luke 9:22 Jesus came to die for our sins. He gave his life on the cross. John 3:16 He loved us. We are to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus. Christians who pick up their crosses…
1) face one direction
2) never turn back
3) no longer have plans of their own

Must Jesus bear the cross alone? Take up your cross and carry it daily. Proverbs 3:5 Submit to Christ. Commit to him.

But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. ~Galatians 6:14

Titus 2:11-12
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

"You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." ~Marcus Aurelius

1 Corinthians 9:27 I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

"No man is free who is not master of himself." ~Epictetus

2 Timothy 1:7 "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

Human nature is complex. Even if we do have inclinations toward violence, we also have inclination to empathy, to cooperation, to self-control. ~Steven Pinker

Proverbs 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.

By constant self-discipline and self-control you can develop greatness of character. ~Grenville Kleiser
