If you want to be used greatly by the Lord in ministry, you have to be ready to be mistreated, lied on, disliked, and talked about by some of the same people who once liked you, supported you, and spoke good of you. You have to be ready to be hated on by some people you love and helped. You have to be ready to be betrayed by some people you sit with and serve with. If you’re not ready to face what David faced, what Joseph faced, what Paul faced, and what Jesus faced, you won’t make it in ministry. We often fail to recognize that persecution and betrayal are necessary in the life of a follower of Christ. Persecution, however, is the ultimate test of our calling. A weak believer will fail under this test. A weak-kneed believer will bow under pressure. It is only when there is a cost to our faith, when God allows us to be tested, that we learn our true level of spiritual maturity, and our level of faithfulness. We will never know if we are loyal to God until we respond faithfully to these kinds of trials and tribulations.

If you’re experiencing the loss of a prodigal child who isn’t currently in touch with you, you probably feel helpless. But our God is a God of compassion and hope who loves our children more than we do. Give yourself permission to grieve. Find hope in the fact that when we aren’t able to be with our children, God is always with them.

People will make decisions about who Jesus is in response to the way we treat them and the way we treat each other. Therefore, our responses to everyone around us ought to be kind, gracious, "seasoned with salt" (Colossians 4:6).
