Something I have personally discovered is this, one of the biggest battles of grief is something no one really talks about.
It’s not always the funeral
It’s not always the visitation
It’s not even the day you say your final goodbye
Or even the financial burden that comes with a loss
Sometimes the hardest part comes afterward. Trying to decide how to find the strength to keep living yourself.
Especially after you’ve buried a huge part of your heart, the world expects you to somehow step back into life like nothing ever happened. To go back to work. To answer messages. To laugh again. To make plans. To sit at dinner tables with an empty chair. To walk into places filled with memories and somehow keep moving forward.
The truth is that grief changes you in so many ways. You didn’t just bury your loved one. You buried parts of yourself that you weren’t
prepared to let go of.
The person you were before that loss no longer exists in quite the same way. Part of healing isn’t learning how to “get over” someone you loved. It’s learning how to carry their memory while continuing to live the life you’ve been given.
And that’s hard. And is not spoken about enough. Which leaves so many feeling like they are trapped in a world they can’t get out of.
Some days you’ll feel strong. Other days, a song, a smell, a picture, or a random memory will bring tears to your eyes when you least expect it. You heart breaks again in a million pieces. With so many questions that seem to have no answers.
If you’re walking through grief, give yourself grace.
You are not weak because you’re struggling to step back into the world. You are learning how to live after losing someone who helped make your world what it was. And on top of that rediscovering what life looks like for you as you move forward.
That takes courage.
One breath.
One step.
One day at a time.
And if no one has told you lately, it’s okay to miss them forever.
And it’s okay to step back and take time for yourself.
Healing from grief matters more than we know.
