Tonight's Message: Last But Not Least
The last of the 10 commandments tells us, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor (Exodus 20:17 NIV).” This command may be last, but it is certainly not least. More than any other, it exposes the inner workings of our heart and mind before the gaze of God. Before we ever get to stealing, or adultery, our imaginations have likely already laid claim on what belongs to someone else and pictured it as our own (James 1:15-16).
Coveting is another way to talk about desiring or wanting something. In the Christian tradition to desire or want something or someone is not bad in and of itself. Yet wanting for ourselves something or someone that God has given to another person, the husband or wife or house and home and goods of our neighbor is always wrong.
We can desire good things. We can desire bad things. We can desire good things in bad ways. Wisdom is needed in the Christian life for sorting this out. As Leslie Jamison writes, “We all seek, we all compensate, we all crave, but we don’t all seek in the same ways and the seeking doesn’t always punish the seeker.” As recovering addicts and alcoholics we know all too well the costs of pursuing peace and happiness in the wrong places (or people). Be curious about your desire: Why do you think your neighbors’ stuff, or the next drink or drug will satisfy you? Let this internal interrogation take you on a journey closer to God. “Without desire, we would cease to be human. Without God as desire’s ultimate end, we become inhumane.”
Asaph’s words invite us to turn our eyes to Jesus as our ultimate desire. “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; He is mine forever (Psalm 73:25-26, NLT).
