The Gospel in 12 Steps: From Brokenness to New Life
The 12 steps mirror the journey of the gospel:
1–3: We admit our powerlessness, believe in a greater power—Jesus—and turn our will over to Him.
4–7: We face our flaws, confess our sins, and humbly ask God to heal us.
8–9: We make amends, seeking restoration with those we've hurt.
10–12: We walk in daily honesty, prayer, and service, carrying hope to others.
These steps are a map back to God’s heart. The Gospel isn’t just preached in churches—it’s walked out in recovery rooms, living rooms, and everyday lives. This is grace, restoration of who God intended us to be.

Am I returning to behaviors I once escaped? Why?
Have I become "wise in my own eyes"? Where do I need humility?
Am I avoiding responsibility or choosing laziness in key areas of life?
Do I need to create distance from foolish or toxic influences?
Are my words helping others recover or pulling them down?

Insight

These verses, when paired, teach discernment — not all arguments are worth having.
In recovery, not every conflict or criticism needs a response. But sometimes, silence enables foolishness.

Choose your battles wisely.

Don’t be dragged into chaos or drama that endangers your peace and sobriety.

Recovery Application

Learn to say no — to toxic people, useless arguments, and distractions.

Practice discernment: Is this helping my growth or harming it?

Insight: Self-deception is deadly in recovery. Thinking “I’ve got this on my own” or “I don’t need help anymore” is a fast track to failure. • True wisdom begins with humility and dependence on God. • Pride isolates; humility brings accountability and growth.
Recovery Application:
• Stay teachable. Be willing to admit you need help — every day.
• Surround yourself with truth-tellers and mentors.

Proverbs 26 — Key Insights for Life & Recovery
1. Repeating Destructive Patterns
Proverbs 26:11 — "Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly."
Insight:
This vivid and unsettling image captures relapse perfectly — returning to the very behavior that once made us sick or broken.
• Relapse isn’t random — it’s often rooted in unresolved foolishness, pride, or denial.
• It shows the danger of refusing correction or failing to learn from past pain.
Recovery Application:
• Break the cycle: Identify triggers and guard against them.
• Get help before temptation turns into action.
• Don’t romanticize old habits — remember the pain they caused.

Every lasting recovery must be built on a solid foundation—and that foundation is Jesus Christ. He is the Rock that never shifts, the Cornerstone that holds all things together (1 Corinthians 3:11; Ephesians 2:20). When our lives have been shaken by addiction, broken choices, or past pain, Christ offers stability, forgiveness, and a new beginning.
Recovery is more than just stopping destructive behaviors; it’s building a new life on Him who gives hope, strength, and purpose.
On our own, we fall. But with Christ, we stand. He is not just part of recovery—He is the very foundation that makes lasting freedom possible.
