Our Path
On a recent hike, I was fortunate enough to be immersed in the lush and green woods. I was actually so enamored with my surroundings, I stopped walking and stared at the scenery and the path ahead of me. When I saw the dirt road, my mind immediately went to one of my favorite poems. I first read it in high school and have never forgotten it.
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
These are the words of the poet Robert Frost and his poem, “The Road Less Taken.” I find the poem to be quite relevant in our faith walk. In the poem, the author wants us to consider the diverging path. Which route should we take? But, if you look closely, the two roads are equal and yet different.
In our lives, we are often faced with choices where there is not a “right” path. Maybe we pray about it. We hope God will give us a sign to help us make the decision.
However, maybe faith is not about choosing the perfect road. It is what we do with the decision and the path we ultimately take. What truly makes all the difference is not the road we choose, but how we walk it. Do we walk the path with hope? Love? Purpose? Faith?
The next time you are at a crossroads, do not be afraid to choose. You will not always know the best path to take and though your choices matter, it may not be for the reason you think it to be true at that moment. All you need to know is whatever path is chosen, God is already a step ahead and waiting for you.
And that makes all the difference.
