Where's Marty? And why?

This napkin is as old as the marriage it commemorates: 39 years tomorrow, by the grace of God!

God's plan for Christian marriage (one man and one woman for life) overflows with blessings: faith, hope, love, forgiveness, passion, compassion, dedication, determination, steadfastness.

God's plan has been intact from the beginning: "The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is a suitable partner for him...' The Lord God built a woman from the rib that he had taken from the man and brought her to the man…The man said... 'For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and will remain united with his wife, and they will become one flesh.'" (Genesis 2:18, 22, 24)

Martin Luther on God's gift of marriage:

- "The Christian is supposed to love his neighbor, and since his wife is his nearest neighbor she should be his deepest love."

- "There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage."

Where's Marty? And why?

Another beer picture? This is only the first one in 2026. Marty is pictured with a Luther Bier, 1517 Edition. Brewed in Germany, and transported all the way to Minocqua, WI, as a gift.

On the front of the bottle is a quote attributed to Luther, “If you don’t have beer, you have nothing to drink.” This is more a reflection of the times – 1500s Europe...and the water - than an encouragement to overindulge!

At times, Luther used beer - and good food - in illustrations about the Gospel:

“I opposed (false teachings and teachers), but never with force. I simply taught, preached, and wrote God’s Word; otherwise I did nothing. And while I slept [cf. Mark 4:26–29], or drank Wittenberg beer with my friends Philip and Amsdorf, the Word so greatly weakened the (enemies of the Church) that no prince or emperor ever inflicted such losses upon it. I did nothing; the Word did everything.”

Take this one to heart! "A sip of water or beer dispels thirst, a piece of bread drives away hunger, Christ drives away death."

Around the turn of the millennium (about 26 years ago), I was involved in a car accident in the driveway of a Post Office in Phoenix. Upon investigation, the insurance company determined that the...
