As believers, how do we attain the “peace that surpasses all understanding” mentioned in Philippians 4?

Living in a sinful and fallen world, even believers will end up offending each other. But if we are brothers and sisters in Christ, filled with the same Holy Spirit, our relationships will be governed by love, grace, forgiveness, peace, and harmony.

It is this relational kind of peace, the kind that “surpasses all understanding” mentioned in Philippians 4, that the Holy Spirit helps us to have.
Through the Gospel, He can bring reconciliation and peace to the most broken of relationships.

This in itself is a great witness to the saving power of the Gospel.

When we’ve been sitting in the wind and the waves and it seems like the boat’s going to sink, Jesus reminds us, “I’m with you.”

Even when we one day meet the storm that we won’t survive, Christ tells us that He’s with us ande will receive us. Through His Holy Spirit, He is always personally present with us.

We are no longer slaves to the fear of death. No matter how dire our circumstances, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” (Colossians 3:15).

"What is this peace that Jesus gives us? The fact that our hearts are troubled (John 14:27) and that we will have tribulation (John 16:33) tells us that it’s not the absence of turmoil and conflict. We’re not promised smooth sailing in this life. What we are promised - the peace Jesus gives us - is a relational peace with our Sovereign God, through which we experience the covenant blessings and the calmness of soul that comes from knowing Him - especially in the midst of tribulation and trouble."

From today's sermon, "The Spirit Helps: Peace" on John 14:27

Jesus, through His Holy Spirit, is the believer’s constant personal companion, such that we are never alone in this life, and He transforms us into the image of Christ, that we walk in obedience to Him.

So whenever your marriage is in trouble…

When your boss asks you to do something unethical…

When you’re in an evangelistic encounter…

He’s with you.

When you're with your discipleship group…

When you're working on your finances…

When you're driving to work…

He’s with you.

When you're dealing with lost and unruly and annoying coworkers…

When you're sitting down to dinner…

When you’re sitting in church…

He’s with you.

When the doctor gives you the diagnosis…

When you get that phone call…

When you’re in the throes of sin and wrestling with temptation…

In any and every moment and circumstance, the person of the Holy Spirit, God Himself, is with you... and in you. In every moment of life, you have a divine companion who is the right-now fulfillment of God's promise to be with us.

The Holy Spirit’s job is to keep the spotlight on Christ to the degree that we hardly notice the Holy Spirit. If you’ve ever wondered why you think about Jesus a lot, but hardly ever the Spirit, that’s a sign that the Holy Spirit is doing a good job.

"Believer, you have in every moment of your life a Divine Companion who is the right now fulfillment of 'God with us,' and He is with you now in just as real of a sense as He will be in the New Heavens and New Earth."

- From yesterday's sermon, The Promise of the Spirit (Part 2), from John 14:16-24.

What the Father purposed, the Son accomplished.
What the Son accomplished, the Spirit applies.

The Holy Spirit is God, and He is the active agent in both our salvation and our sanctification—our becoming more like Christ.

The Father from eternity past purposed to save a people for Himself from among the mass of those dead in their sin.
Jesus, the Son, came to earth to accomplish that salvation. And He did so by living a life of perfect obedience to the Father.

The Spirit comes and through the Word of Christ makes us wise unto salvation (2 Timothy 3:15).
He opens our hearts to understand both our sinful state and the wrath of God that we deserve for our sin.

He helps us to understand what Christ did for us, from birth, to death, to resurrection.
As we receive that message and then are obedient to it, the Holy Spirit makes his home in us, applies the whole of the gospel to us, and then helps us to live the rest of our lives as Christians in this sinful world.
