After gaining a clear vision of the foundation for the Psalms in God's Truth (Psalm 1) and God's King (Psalm 2), you might expect a rousing Psalm of praise rejoicing in God! What we actually find, as we come to Psalm 3, is a desperate cry for help. David offers up a Lament, crying out to God because of attack coming from both outside himself and from within his own heart. It's raw and it's real. That's what is so powerful about the Psalms - they don't deny the reality of struggle, pain, and hurt. But they also don't leave you there, because there is a King (Jesus) Who rules over life and there is Truth (God's Word) that tells us God's true character and how He responds when we cry out to Him.
To gain the backstory of Psalm 3, read II Samuel 13:1 - 19:8, and pay special attention to David's relationship with Absalom. While David faced an overt attack from Absalom, David also carried a weight that impacted how he responded (or didn't). It's a helpful insight, as we wrestle with the weight and shame that we can so often carry - even for years at a time.
Join us this Sunday morning at 10:30am as we continue in the Psalms!
