Today, we lovingly honor the life and legacy of Walter Martin Jr., a gifted
musician, visionary arranger, educator, and a beloved son of Central Baptist
Church, Inc.. For numerous years, he faithfully served as our Minister of Music,
dedicating his gifts to strengthening the worship experience and musical quality of our congregation.

His influence extended beyond Central through his deep commitment and
leadership with the Tennessee Western Regional Choir, where he helped cultivate
excellence in gospel music and inspired singers across the region. He also
demonstrated strong Christian education leadership, pouring into not only the choir ministry at Central Baptist Church but also the Sunday School department, helping to nurture spiritual growth, biblical understanding, and discipleship within the congregation.

Beyond the church, his impact reached into education and the broader Memphis
music community. He was instrumental to the music program at Booker T.
Washington High School in Memphis, where students such as legendary musician Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire were shaped and inspired. Students across the country often express their deep respect for Mr. Martin, recognizing his encouragement, discipline, and belief in their potential. This connection places him within the rich musical heritage of Memphis that helped cultivate artists who would go on to influence music worldwide.

Walter Martin, Jr. was widely known for his masterful ability to create brilliant
gospel music arrangements and medleys, blending songs with creativity and spiritual sensitivity in ways that ushered worshippers into powerful encounters with God. His music was not simply heard, it was felt. Through his leadership, choirs were elevated, musicians were mentored, and worship became a transformative experience.

Today, we honor the remarkable legacy of a pioneering gospel
composer, educator, and church leader whose influence helped
shape the sound of Black sacred music in America…Lucie E.
Campbell. Born in 1885, Lucie E. Campbell became one of the
most prominent figures in gospel music through her work with
the National Baptist Convention, where she directed music and
trained choirs across the country. She composed more than 100
hymns and gospel songs that continue to bless congregations
today.
Her legacy is especially meaningful to us because Lucie E.
Campbell was a faithful member right here at Central Baptist
Church. Her gifts were not only shared nationally but nurtured
within this very church community. One of her most memorable
compositions, “When I Get Home,” remains a treasured
selection that is still sung at Central Baptist Church today as a
living reminder of her faith, devotion, and musical excellence.
Lucie E. Campbell’s life reflects the power of dedication to
God’s work and leaves a legacy of worship for generations to
come. As we celebrate Black History, we also celebrate the rich
spiritual heritage that lives within our own church family.

Today, we honor the extraordinary musical legacy of one of the
most influential gospel composers of our time, Richard
Smallwood. A visionary musician, pianist, and songwriter,
Richard Smallwood has blessed the body of Christ with music
that bridges traditional gospel, classical influence, and
contemporary worship. His compositions are known for their
rich harmonies, biblical depth, and the ability to usher believers
into a powerful atmosphere of praise and surrender.

Through songs that have ministered to generations around the
world, Richard Smallwood has reminded us that worship is not
just music, it is ministry. His timeless anthem “Total Praise”
calls us to lift our eyes to the hills and recognize God as our
strength and hope. His encouraging ballad “Trust Me” speaks
directly to seasons of uncertainty, reminding us that God is
faithful even when we cannot see His plan. And his heartfelt
declaration “I Love the Lord” expresses the deep gratitude of a
believer who knows that God hears our cries and delivers us
from fear.

On today, we celebrate not only his musical excellence but his
obedience to the call of God by using his gift to heal hearts,
strengthen faith, and lead countless people into worship.
As we honor Richard Smallwood in song, may we be reminded
that praise is our response to God’s goodness, trust is our
posture in every season, and love is our testimony.

Today, we pause to honor and celebrate the legacy of The Williams Brothers, a group whose voices, faith, and dedication have helped shape the sound and soul of gospel music for more than six decades.

Formed in 1960 in Jackson, Mississippi by Leon “Pop” Williams, The Williams Brothers emerged from a rich tradition of Black gospel that has always been more than music, it has been ministry, testimony, and survival. Through seasons of joy and struggle, their harmonies carried hope, preached freedom, and reminded us that God is present in every chapter of our story.

With more than 40 albums released, numerous Billboard chart honors, multiple Grammy nominations, and induction into the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame, their impact is undeniable. Yet beyond the awards, their greatest contribution has been their faithfulness; using music to uplift the Black church, preserve sacred tradition, and pass the sound of authentic gospel from one generation to the next.

As we celebrate Black History, we recognize that groups like The Williams Brothers are living history. Their music tells our story that is rooted in perseverance, strengthened by faith, and anchored in praise.

Today, we thank them for their obedience to the call, for the songs that carried us through, and for a legacy that continues to bless the body of Christ.
